Position Summary: Shelter Island Boats is a locally owned and operated business celebrating over 13 years in business. We are proud to continuously grow our business and develop our employees. We're looking to add a self-motivated, energetic, knowledgeable team leader (mechanic/technician) to our service team to grow with us.

Technician/mechanic must have experience with trouble shooting, diagnosing and repair of various vessel systems and propulsion, along with the diagnosing and repair of marine electrical systems, plumbing systems, gas and diesel engines and generators. Experience with gas engines and out drives is a must. Must be able to supervise and direct personnel, take directions well, eager to learn, and willing to train employees.

Responsibilities:

Oversee day-to-day service operations including scheduling and distribution of work for service department

Supervise and direct department personnel

Use schematics, technical manuals, and diagnostic equipment to test and repair marine diesel/gas propulsion and handling systems, boat engines and systems

Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste)

Coordinate technical and product knowledge training for service team and provide technical assistance as needed

Determine customer needs, providing clear and precise instructions on the work order for the service team

Maintain an exceptional level of customer service and relations

Promote the sale of additional labor services, parts, and accessories in a professional manner for each customer based on the customer’s needs and desires

Follow up to be sure jobs are being completed timely and customers are being communicated with thoroughly

Field questions and concerns as needed from customers and billing clerk

Verify all parts and labor are billed as appropriate before sending to billing clerk for collection or call to customer to let them know it’s complete

Install and repair gas and diesel inboard engines, I/O engines and gas and diesel generators

Oil changes and winterization of numerous vessel

Available to work overtime to meet deadlines

Qualifications:

10 + years of marine industry experience preferred

Experience with and knowledge of outboard engines and inboard engines required

Experience with I/O engines preferred

Technical school training preferred

Basic boat handling skills required

Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work independently or in group settings

Problem-solving orientation, self-disciplined, and honest

Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines

Ability to work in confined spaces

Ability to lift 75 pounds

Experience with both gas and diesel engines required

Positive attitude and willingness to learn

Bi-lingual abilities is a plus
