Overview The Global Virtualization & Cloud Engineer, under the general direction of the Manager, will assist in the day-to-day tasks critical to the team's success including the planning, design, implementation, and support of VMWare, Windows Server and/or desktop platforms. This team member is responsible primarily for the assessment, optimization, and automation of virtualization platforms. This individual will become thoroughly familiar with all compliance, regulatory and security requirements adhering to all corporate policies and standards. This person needs to be experienced in technology with good planning and coordination skills. An energetic, solution minded personality with drive, attention to details and excellent communication skills will be needed for success in this position. Additionally, the engineers will focus on sustainability and improvement of processes, including any or all of the following duties: documenting managed environments, basic project management tasks, evening and weekend deployments, maintenance of ticketing queues and after hours on call. Responsibilities JOB DUTIES

  • Serve as an infrastructure engineer for the multi-disciplinary project teams they are assigned
  • Build, install, configure and maintain VMware products including vSphere, ESXi hosts, HA clusters and vCenter
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting, problem resolution, and technical direction to junior engineers in support of the entire Virtualization Infrastructure
  • Deep-dive, in-depth research to determine the root cause of problems/outages; escalate to engineering and vendor support as necessary
  • Develop, automate and implement operational best practices
  • Perform Capacity Management functions
  • Effectively collaborate with Server / Storage / Network / Data Center / Facilities / Audit / Compliance and PMO teams
  • Manage problem and service tickets ensuring timely resolution to meet expected service levels
  • Participate in Business Continuation / Disaster Recovery infrastructure planning, building, and testing
  • Must have the ability to understand and relate to new products, technology, strategy and be able to follow directions
  • Ability to conduct training sessions to share knowledge with peers and other support teams is necessary
  • Develop, implement, troubleshoot and resolve software, hardware, configuration and operational problems across the VMware and Wintel platforms
  • Develop, implement, and maintain automated processes using VMware vRealize Orchestrator and VMware vRealize Automation technologies
  • Effectively communicates current status of all projects, problems, and issues to the department management team
  • Proactively identifies opportunities for improvements to existing processes and for automation of time consuming tasks
  • Ensure that all virtualization platforms are running at optimal capacity
  • Study and analyze the performance and capacities of the systems and peripheral equipment/systems and prepare plans for future expansion and upgrades
  • Collaborates with external and internal customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and deliver the artifacts as needed
  • Must have high attention to detail, be well organized and be a self-starter
  • Must be able to work with limited to moderate direct supervision
  • Contributes to the development of RFPs/SOWs and participates in the vendor selection process
  • Uses a broad and deep understanding of technical concepts in multiple specialized fields to develop solutions to problems and critical design issues
  • Resolves most conflicts between timeline, budget, and scope independently but intuitively
  • Escalates complex or consequential issues to management
  • Identifies and directs changes through appropriate review and approval mechanisms
  • Maintain Service Now change and incident queue, closing tickets in a timely manner with appropriate documentation and change management queue
  • Working ticketing system incident and change management queue as needed
  • General Windows operating system and applications support
  • Periodic platform upgrades as needed, both on the OS and application tier
  • Install system patches and application updates as directed
  • Respond to compliance assessments and initiate corrective action when appropriate for audit and compliance remediation
  • Define and evangelize enterprise policies, standards and position statements for new and existing Virtualization and Automation related technologies
  • The candidate must be willing to accommodate weekend, shift or on-call schedules when necessary, and participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support
  • Assist the management team with research in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in Virtualization, Automation and physical Wintel technologies, trends, and knowledge, and legislation
  • Assist the management team in determining the direction and enhancement of automation processes to meet the needs of the organization
  • Identify and evaluate third party vendors, technology, or processes for integration with GM Financials technology and equipment
  • Assist other engineers with performance analysis, process improvement, task automation, and systems capacity planning
  • Capacity to work with a high degree of professionalism, communicating effectively and appropriately
  • Participate in company provided training and perform independent training and research as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications Knowledge
  • Expert-level technical knowledge of VMware virtualization technologies (vCenter, vSphere, ESXi, DRS, vMotion, HA, FT, DRS, SRM, vSphere Replication, vRealize for Business, vRealize Automation, vRealize Orchestration vRealize Operations, VMware HCX, vSAN, NSX, vReailze Log Insight, vRealize Network Insight, VMware Life Cycle Manager)
  • Expert-level technical knowledge of VDI technologies, VMware Horizon View, Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop
  • Expert-level experience with static desktop and dynamic desktop supporting technologies such as Cloning, Thin Provisioning, Application Virtualization and Streaming (App-V)
  • Advanced knowledge in Infrastructure design and management
  • Experience working in 200+ server environment preferred
  • Working knowledge of management processes such as personnel administration, planning and budgeting
  • Advanced understanding of IT Service Management (ITSM) best practices and processes
  • Experience with UML Design Tools
  • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, OSI model and imp subnetting
  • High level understanding of technology infrastructure, security concepts and platforms
  • Strong understanding of VMware Cloud technologies including Azure and AWS
  • Advanced knowledge of IBM pSeries hardware, operating systems and TSM backup infrastructure
  • Advanced knowledge of the OSI model and security that is associated with each layer
  • Strong understanding of application layer protocols including HTTP, SSH, SSL, and DNS
  • Knowledge and stay abreast on the latest security and privacy legislation, regulations, advisories, alerts and vulnerabilities
  • Knowledge of IT security processes and controls as well as IT infrastructure and networking technical knowledge
  • Expert-level knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business functions and processes
  • Expert-level knowledge of Windows Server 2008, 2012 & 2016 support, including local user/group management, security policy, task scheduler, event logs, performance monitoring, group policy, powershell remoting, file/share permissions
  • Knowledge of VMware Tanzu
  • Knowledge of Kubernetes concepts
  • Knowledge of Cisco ACI SDN networking concepts
  • Strong experience with Storage Area Network's including boot from SAN Technologies
  • Expert-level technical knowledge of HP hardware to include C7000 enclosures, ML/DL & BL server and blade technologies, Virtual Connect, and HP OneView
  • Expert-level technical knowledge of current generation Dell hardware including Dell VxRail and Open Manage management platform
  • Troubleshooting knowledge, utilizing packet sniffers, Fiddler, log parsers, and other utilities relative to problem diagnosis and remediation
  • Expert-level knowledge of VMware virtualization concepts and automation methods
  • Scripting and automation languages a plus, particularly PowerShell and Terraform
  • Demonstrated success in project management
