POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director creates and oversees execution of United Way Worldwide’s (UWW) Network-facing communications strategy and plan, with all United Ways in the U.S. and in our international Network as key audience. This position has overall responsibility for developing innovative communications strategies and tactics, including creating messaging, and leveraging cadence platforms and channels to support Network-facing and Network-focused initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION:

The individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:

  • Demonstrate superior oral, written and digital communications skills.

  • Deploy top-notch strategic thinking skills to support internal UWW teams who are looking to reach the Network to motivate them to advance UWW initiatives.
  • Create strategic communications plans, framework, protocols, and messaging that support UWW’s organizational goals.
  • Oversee the development of communications channels that drive and grow engagement between UWW and its global Network, including evolving the existing Network-facing newsletter.
  • Evaluate the organization’s network communications program and activities to ensure it is meeting/exceeding goals/objectives.
  • Successfully partner with organizational stakeholders to ensure alignment with UWW’s communications strategies/messages.
  • Build and nurture strong professional relationships with colleagues within the Network and UWW .
  • Demonstrate high emotional intelligence and leadership skills to instill stakeholder confidence in the role and value of strategic network communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree with at least eight years of progressive experience in a strategic communications role, and at least three to five years of experience in a leadership role. Candidates will have demonstrated experience translating overarching organizational goals into effective communications strategies. Must have a proven track record of developing and executing broad strategic communications plans that define success, set metrics and target multiple audiences. Must be a superior writer/editor on traditional and digital platforms, and an effective communications advisor able to deliver difficult counsel with tact. Ideal candidate will have international and US communications experience. Fluency in more than one language is a plus.

NOTE: Candidates should be prepared to submit writing and communications planning samples that demonstrate their experience designing and executing strategic communications plans (as described above).
