Position Title: Director, Individual Engagement

Reports to: Chief Strategy Officer

Position Summary

The Director of Individual Engagement & Gifts will oversee relationship building and management with key donor groups and work with the development team to create strategies for growth.

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement engagement strategies to reach goals as it relates to Individual Resource Development (RD) to meet annual campaign goal. Develop, maintain, and support relationships with individuals that currently support our mission.
  • Creates and manages individual donor ($1-$9,999) communications throughout the calendar year
  • Identifies and directly engages donors that are part of company campaigns
  • Foster Individual Giving Relationships
  • Solicit & engage new individual donors at all giving levels
  • Actively engage individual donor(s); be customer, donor, volunteer-centered at all times
  • Respond to emails quickly and with accuracy
  • Identify new avenues for public communication regarding our work
  • Donor specific engagement communication
  • Serve as staff liaison to Affinity Groups; identifies and implements new affinity groups for increased donor engagement
  • Develop strategies and plan to engage donors – increased volunteering leading to increased giving
  • Individual Donor Data management
  • Responds to data requests from donors
  • Manages data for individual givers
  • Supports engagement events for major gifts, creates and manages events for lower giving thresholds
  • In tandem with the department creates and manages a comprehensive individual donor communication strategy focused on retention and recruitment

Professional Skills and Additional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated understanding of strategic development efforts for an organization that generates $10 million or more in fundraising revenue annually. Must show progressive thinking, with understanding of philanthropic trends and best practices in donor-centered fundraising.
  • Experience with data management and reporting
  • Experience planning fund raising events
  • Excellent relationship cultivation skills and the ability to engage donors across multiple income levels. Ability to relate with a diverse group of individual or organizations. Must demonstrate comfort in socializing professionally in both intimate settings and at larger social events.
  • Attention to detail and follow through on all elements of work.
  • Experience in working with volunteer boards and committees.
  • Must be available to meet with donors and prospects according to their schedule, often in the early morning, evenings and on limited occasions the weekend. Must be able to provide own transportation to such meetings at various locations around the Knoxville area.
  • Comfort and proficiency with presentation skills in one on one and small group settings.
  • Fluent in the English language, both oral and written, including correct punctuation, spelling and grammatical usage.
  • Ability to complete basic math as well as review and interpret reports and graphs.
  • Proficient in the latest Microsoft Office Environment (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of United Way.

Mental demands

Duties require planning, organizing, and performing a variety of duties applying a wide range of procedures and rules. Duties require attention to detail, high degree of accuracy, reliability, timeliness, alertness, and use of judgment. Also requires writing ability, creativity, and concentration. Access to and use of confidential data where discretion/sensitivity is of utmost importance. Mature judgment and confidence. Active listening is an essential skill.

Experience, Qualifications, and Competencies

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, Business, or Nonprofit, Equivalent experience accepted.
  • Experience in resource development, fundraising, special events, and planned giving.
  • Background in complex organizations of commensurate size and scope.
  • Skilled at effectively presenting information and ideas to executive teams, volunteers, and board of directors.
  • Passion for the mission and values of United Way.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders to inspire trust
  • Outstanding interpersonal, coaching, and listening skills, with the ability to communicate positively within all levels of the organization.
  • Thrive in a dynamic environment and able to work on various projects simultaneously.
  • Recognized for both emotional intelligence and intellectual rigor.
  • Committed to exploring new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Must be COACHABLE.

Desirable, But Not Required

  • Previous experience in mid to large United Way Member organization.
  • Understands the local community and the unique challenges and opportunities available

Accountabilities

  • Work in partnership with the Major Gifts Officer with donors along their giving journey
  • Support Chief Strategy Officer and Campaign Chair in activities around campaign

  • This position and the location of duties necessary requires flexibility, as many job duties may need to be performed in various locations, including but not limited to, Property Partner sites, Partner Homeless Service Agency sites, and other networking activity locations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
