Education and Work Experience:

Education: College degree preferred but not required.

Experience: 3-5 years’ experience working in Christian ministry, discipleship and volunteer coordination type settings; strong analytical, research, statistical, writing, proofing, attention to detail, time-management, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential.

Scope of Position:

The Volunteer Coordinator position is responsible for recruiting and supporting volunteers to assist in all local Salvation Army church and social service programs, including but not limited to, social services programs, corps youth and adult programs, kettles, other Christmas programs and special events.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Knowledge required: use standard office machines (e.g., fax, copier, multi-line telephone, keyboard); use standard office practices and procedures; read, write, and speak the English language to express ideas and communicate effectively.

Skill required: establish effective working relationships; attention to detail, operate a motor vehicle.

Ability required: Interact with individuals using generally accepted business behaviors and standards. Use interpersonal skills to deal effectively with others in favorable and unfavorable situations. Organize, prioritize, and plan own work. Multitask, i.e., change work focus or respond to change of conditions and interruptions in workflow. Learn new systems and procedures. Problem solve, i.e., the ability to identify problems and find effective solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Attend Sunday Worship and support Corps Officers in the discipleship process in order to produce a more active church body.

2. Provide spiritual counseling and support to volunteers who request it.

3. Inform all volunteers about The Salvation Army mission and how they can become involved in the corps if they are not involved in any other congregation.

4. Recruit volunteers to support local Salvation Army social, corps, kettle and other fundraising programs.

5. Communicate timely on all volunteer inquiries.

6. Responsible to make the volunteering experience positive for every volunteer.

7. Conduct volunteer orientation and ensure all required training for volunteers is completed.

8. Meet and greet volunteers on their first day of volunteer service, when practical, to promote and foster a sense of teamwork.

9. Ensure all volunteers are shown regular verbal appreciation for their service.

10. Complete written and verbal thanking and follow up of all volunteers and organizations.

11. Coordinate an annual thank you event for volunteers.

12. In recruiting volunteers, meet with service organizations, businesses, corporations, churches, schools, and other community groups leaders to learn what volunteering interest they have and match them with local Salvation Army opportunities.

13. Responsible to coordinate Salvation Army officers, employees, clients, volunteers to speak at and share Salvation Army programs and stories at service organizations, businesses, corporations, churches, schools, and other community groups to recruit supporters and volunteer.

14. In consultation with the Corps officer and local Salvation Army staff, develop, identify and create volunteer positions for existing Salvation Army programs, ministry areas and fundraising. This includes, but is not be limited to, creating volunteer position descriptions and determining and scheduling volunteers in existing programs to ensure a proper fit and an enjoyable volunteer experience.

15. Based on community need and approval from Corps officer, create and implement new Salvation Army programs and recruit volunteers for the following programs:

  • Social Services Program – Back to School supply drive and distribution, Pantry Operation, Hot meals and Sack Lunch program
  • Corps – Sweet Prayers, Homeless Outreach Initiatives

  • Fundraising – Develop Service Club Kettle Competition to raise the most money in a day, Kettle Volunteers.

16. Be present at events to work with volunteers, including stepping in and/or trouble shooting if there is a breakdown or volunteers do not show.

17. Create volunteer promotional material in both physical and electronic format.

18. Monitor and update the Corps Salvation Army volunteer website and social media sites.

19. Ensure the administration and completion of paperwork for all corps volunteers.

20. Coordinate all Protecting-the-Mission (PTM) training requirements and adherence to such policy for all volunteers to include the processing and coordinating of required criminal background checks.

21. Report PTM concerns/violations via available resources such as Notice of Concerns (NOC).

22. Other duties as assigned.
