Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

With minimal supervision, handles all levels of misdemeanors and simple felonies. With some supervision, handles more complex felony criminal offenses such as robberies, sexual assaults, and aggravated assaults.Human Resource Contact: 307-777-7667 nisha.bishop1@wyo.govESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Initial meeting with clients. Review charges, potential penalties, and evidence asserted against the client. Explain the case process and procedure. Answer the questions posed by the client.

  • Meet with the prosecutor and determine their position: review discovery, police reports, witness reports in the case.

  • Review the evidence with the client and understand their position and what new evidence needs to be developed or investigated. Determine the client's status regarding a possible plea agreement.

  • Meet/conference with the client prior to court appearances. Appear in Court with the client. Resolve and finalize the case through the change of plea hearing, suppression hearing, or trial.

  • Prepare potential motions to suppress evidence or other pretrial motions.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

Preference will be given to applicants who have handled a complex felony caseload and is willing to continue to do so with some ability to handle all levels of misdemeanor cases.KNOWLEDGE:

  • Wyoming Criminal Law

  • United States Constitution

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Juris Doctorate

Experience:

5-8 years of relevant legal experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

License to practice law in Wyoming
