Job Description

We are expanding our legal team and are looking for an exceptional and experienced data privacy lawyer for a senior role in the dentsu Americas legal team, reporting to the Americas General Counsel. The role involves leading the data protection team in the Americas region and overseeing data privacy compliance across all our different brands, including media, creative and data-driven service lines. This role is a great opportunity for any data privacy lawyer to tackle some of the most challenging data protection issues arising from cutting-edge uses of data in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will join a large and vibrant international community of lawyers who provide practical and focused legal advice supporting dentsu as it drives sustainable business growth for our clients.

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about data privacy and will bring energy and enthusiasm to the role. There is plenty of opportunity to develop professional and personal skills, take a leading role in the Legal and Compliance team, and work alongside senior management as a trusted business advisor. While a background in media or technology is not necessary for the role, a keen interest in learning about new technologies and data practices is critical.

Responsibilities of the role include the following:

  • Provide legal and strategic data protection advice to stakeholders at various levels of the organization (including executive-level boards and committees) that minimizes risk, resolves issues, maximizes opportunities for business to deliver on its goals and protects dentsu’s commercial interests.
  • Act as an escalation point for other members of the Americas legal team on matters to do with privacy.
  • Collaborate effectively with teams across dentsu, including global teams, to help implement and improve the company’s global data protection program.
  • Drive and manage large-scale data protection governance programs and projects across the Americas.
  • Monitor and respond to developments in data protection and information security, including new laws, regulations, key judgements, and regulatory guidance.
  • Partner with senior leaders and commercial stakeholders to embed privacy protections into new and existing products, as well as advise on ways to minimize operational privacy risks.
  • Advocate the importance of good and robust privacy protections across the company and conduct training and awareness-raising exercises.
  • Act as dentsu’s representative in privacy-related interactions with regulators, law enforcement agencies and individuals in the Americas.
  • Advise on and negotiate data protection issues within commercial contracts.
  • Manage privacy counsel and privacy compliance direct reports, as well as provide strategic guidance to local market DPOs within the Americas region.
  • Brief and manage external legal counsel in a variety of matters.

Qualifications

  • A lawyer with deep experience in data privacy (preferably 10 years or more) and knowledge of applicable laws and best practices. Knowledge of European data protection laws would be advantageous. IAPP CIPP certification is preferred but not required.
  • Proven track record in privacy program management.
  • Experience advising on emerging technologies within advertising, media and marketing would be advantageous.
  • Someone who:
    • has a great sense of humor, a client-service mentality and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across teams and jurisdictions, as well as with clients who place their trust in dentsu;
    • has a desire to learn more about the wider media and advertising industry;
    • possesses well-developed prioritization skills given the likelihood of dealing with multiple projects and internal clients at any one time;
    • can work autonomously, take initiative and be pro-active in addressing new matters or challenges;
    • has a passion for the work they do and the industries they work in, with a demonstrated ability to show leadership;
    • is confident to clearly communicate on matters that involve board-level and senior management attention;
    • has strong commercial and business acumen that allows the individual to efficiently and expeditiously compare the relevant legal risks to the scope of commercial strategy and corporate objectives;
    • is keen to mentor junior lawyers, including acting as a role-model for such individuals and supervising their professional and functional development objectives; and
    • believes in the importance of contributing to social impact, DEI and pro bono initiatives at dentsu.
