Special Settings Outbreak Investigation Team

Job duties:

Under clinical guidance of Setting Team Lead:

  • Investigates suspected and confirmed outbreaks in a variety of special settings including Child/Youth Congregate Settings, healthcare facilities, homeless shelters and encampments, unlicensed residential facilities, workplaces, and transitional housing sites.

  • Assesses the status of potential outbreaks in a population by applying disease transmission concepts including determining infectious periods, incubation periods, and possible modes of transmission.

  • Conducts detailed, unstructured interviews with setting representatives. Interviews do not follow a script but investigate emerging evidence and hypotheses. Focus of interviews can involve gathering situational data including:

  • Cases and contacts linked to the setting.
  • Disease containment efforts
  • Prevention plans
  • Infection control practices
  • Compliance with reporting, testing recommendations/requirements, basic and enhanced prevention measures.

  • Based on assessment, provides oral and written detailed recommendations to guide outbreak control and management efforts. Specific recommendations are tailored to facility leadership with varying degrees of public health knowledge and experience.

  • Supports facility leadership to implement recommendations by sharing guidance, providing education, and linking to resources.

  • Performs surveillance activities throughout the course of an outbreak to monitor for ongoing transmission and to assess the effectiveness of interventions. Surveillance activities may involve working with multidisciplinary SSOIT staff to review and interpret surveillance reports.

  • Enters, tracks, interprets, and synthesizes clinical and epidemiological information using line list spreadsheets. These actions are necessary to:

  • Identify linkage and clusters of cases.
  • Identify potential sources of transmission.
  • Ensure effective disease containment efforts.

  • Participates in setting team huddles for sharing of case reports, resources, and knowledge and to support peer learning and exchange. Investigators also pilot materials and resources and provide feedback to team leads to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Persistent and curious: able to say “ I don’ t know” but follow-up to find the answers.
  • Must have a quiet, dedicated workspace.
  • User provided home high-speed network connection.
