Job Description

The members of our Data Engineering department build systems and infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing huge sets of data in batch and streaming pipelines. As a sub-team within Data Engineering, the Data Discoverability and Tooling team is responsible for making it easy for anybody at Etsy to find the data they desire.

We use our engineering expertise and our intimate knowledge of data use cases to strategize useful business intelligence solutions. We build and maintain tools to help the rest of the company find, transform, store, and visualize their data. We value curiosity, enthusiasm, responsibility and generosity of spirit.

We're looking for a skilled engineer who cares about the internal customers who use our data. We are a tooling team so full stack web development experience is critical (we work in PHP and JavaScript); data engineering or data-tangential experience is also valuable (we work in Python, Java, and SQL, and we work with technologies like Airflow, Looker, GCS and BigQuery, Hadoop, Kafka and Scalding). Experience with any of these is helpful but not required; we are a team that prizes a “figure it out” spirit over experience with specific technologies.

This is a full-time role and can be located in our Brooklyn, NY headquarters or fully remote. All offices are currently closed due to COVID-19 and expected to begin phased reopening in late 2021.

Qualifications

About the Role

• Build and maintain internal tools for finding, querying, transforming, and visualizing data.
• Integrate, maintain and exhibit expertise in third-party business intelligence tooling.
• Serve as a guiding light for web development best practices.
• Act as the last line of defense for system failures owned by the team.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers in the team.
• Serve as a friendly and helpful entrypoint to the data organization for a broad variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Build broad knowledge of the data organization at large in order to provide informed training and support for data users.

About You:

• You direct and implement solutions to moderately complex, loosely scoped problems that are aligned with your team's goals. You deliver projects independently or by leading your teammates to do so. You are comfortable both leading and following.
• Your work extends to many parts of a product or system.
• You enable other engineers on your team to be successful. You are generous with your time and experience, and can mentor other engineers.
• You understand that being an effective software engineer is about communicating with people as much as it is about writing code. You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• You are willing to work with and improve code you did not originally write.
• You are flexible with languages and tools and are willing to learn whatever is necessary to get the job done.
• You have familiarity with a few of the following:writing SQL queries for exploration and analysis, building and modifying full-stack internal tool web apps
• By default write testable code, and are comfortable writing unit tests and mentoring other developers on unit testing.
