Job Description

The Commodity Buyer is responsible for indirect and direct purchases of manufacturing and production parts and components, including metal purchasing. Thisrole requires minimal direction and is expected to handle more complex and multiple projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Analyzes bid proposals and negotiates contract terms and conditions (within the budgetary limitations) and maintain vendor agreements
  • Identifies the best sourcing options and prepares and submits bid requests to the selected suppliers
  • Strategic purchasing which includes supplier negotiation, supplier evaluation and selection
  • Establishes and maintains strong relationships with key suppliers and visits supplier facilities as necessary.
  • Assess purchase orders for accuracy and compliance with regulations
  • Receive price quotes from vendors, compare quotes against requirements and the budget, and purchase orders
  • Purchase non-direct inventory items such as: compressors, valves, pumps and gaskets
  • Process PO’s and communicate with vendors on status, including order acknowledgements
  • Track open orders
  • Resolve receiving and invoicing issues
  • Understand Kanban and utilize for forecasting
  • Maintains close communication with Engineering, Facilities, Accounting and Plant Management
  • Enter orders into the ERP System

Qualifications

EDUCATION

  • HS diploma or equivalent
  • College degree desired

QUALIFICATONS:

  • Minimum 3 year buying experience in high volume manufacturing in a fast paced environment required
  • Strongly prefer experience with commodities and indirect material
  • Ability to identify different types of metals
  • Knowledge and experience in pricing different grades of metal using cost models
  • Extensive knowledge and use of ERP/MRP systems
  • Must possess negotiation, analytical, multitasking and organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong computer skills to include: Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Superior time management skills, able to work independently and set priorities

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to:

  • Perform activities including bending, stooping, standing, walking
  • Sit or stand for seven (7) to eight (8) hours per day
  • Stand and walk from one (1) to two (2) hours per day
  • Climb up and down stairs once or twice per day
  • Operate common office equipment, i.e. PC, phone, copier, printer, fax
  • Work in climate controlled environment
  • Work occasionally on shop floor with exposure to minimal dust, dirt, and fumes.
