Job Description

This is an outstanding opportunity to develop professional expertise and contribute to a specialized team. As an intern, the person in this position typically works full-time for a defined period during a schooling break. The intern works closely with experts in the area of specialization or on teams to address critical business needs. It is anticipated that successful execution will lead to significant career opportunities within the Harsco Rail.

This post is in the engineering department. Ideal candidate will serve current product & process improvement initiatives such as VA/VE (Value add Value engineer), Engineering process improvements and design for manufacturing/assembly (DFMA) projects. Work closely with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, and Production teams for idea generation, cost analysis, and solution validation and implementation.

Responsible for driving the company’s efforts regarding Value Analysis and Value Engineering. To determine cost saving options in current product. Identify and implement plans to increase design / manufacturing efficiencies. Evaluate & streamline current engineering processes for continues improvement & sustainment. Work with cross-functional team for idea generation, validation and implementation. Develop cost savings initiative through design manufacturability modifications. Analyze existing product designs to determine cost drivers and recommend modifications to improve manufacturability and cost to meet the business goals. Prepare a project business case in support of proposed changes, which include evaluations against traditional business metrics such as NPV and ROI and deliver to management and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

A. Education & Certification Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering. Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering preferred. Six Sigma Green Belt or higher preferred.B. Experience & Skill Continuous improvement tools – Value stream mapping, A3, DMAIC, TPM, Kanban etc. Minimum 6 months of experience in improvement projects. Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical data. Applications for continuous improvement: Minitab, Power BI, Excel etc. Knowledge of DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and processes. Strong Project skills and process orientation. Ability to assess needs, design and implement processes to achieve annual VA/VE goal.

C. Interpersonal Skills Ability to work with multi-disciplined functional teams. The ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical data. The ability to write in a clear and concise manner. The ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other departments. Ability to communicate project status updates in a team environment.
