The Data Communications team strives to provide the University with a state of the art sophisticated data network infrastructure, both wired and wireless. It designs, configures, maintains, upgrades and monitors UCSD’s enterprise routers, switches, wireless access points and associated management tools. The Team assists customers by providing consultation, evaluation, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of network devices throughout the campus. This position will be one of two senior network engineers on a team that also has eight mid-level network engineers. This position works with the network architects to deploy new technologies on campus. Current projects underway include SDN, network backbone upgrades including new VSS deployments, ISE integration, DNA-C deployment and integration, and more. The position is also expected to mentor and assist the mid-level network engineers in their work and professional growth, and serve as an escalation resource for troubleshooting, including after hours, weekends and holidays as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide design, engineering, and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus wireless and wired local area network.
  • Applies advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures and objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Determines methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results.
  • Employee must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Employee must be available to travel as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • In-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 2 and 3 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • Detailed knowledge of TCP/IP protocol suite and routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, RIP.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively on large, highly available computer networks supporting critical applications.
  • Has highly developed problem solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise. Proven skill in analyzing network problems, performance of fault isolation, problem resolution and service restoration.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
