SummaryThe Technical Director provides technical guidance and leadership to engineering teams and communicates with top management. Performs and oversees engineering activities including proposals, design oversight, design reviews, project planning and product development oversight and leadership for responsible development and production programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities, include, but, are not limited to the following: Product Development
  • Drive program execution and management
  • Successfully manage the design through all phases of the design process (concept, development, qualification, and production).
  • Provides guidance and solutions to technical challenges related to switching power supplies for Defense applications
  • Provides or concurs with design concepts
  • Provides or concurs with estimated performance
  • Concurs with compliance of design against requirement
  • Reviews risks for programs (cost, scheduled, performance)
  • Provide technical assessment of development programs
  • Participate in design reviews, product development and generating product concepts
  • Provides assessment and feedback at design reviews
  • Participates in new and innovative design strategies to reduce costs and improve product performance and reliability
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel ensuring the efficient operation of the function and ensure the timely execution of projects.
  • Ensure sufficient support to Marketing and sustaining engineering activities
  • Participate in preparation of Budget
  • Provide input and/or present at the annual planning conference
  • Provide input for the annual organizational review
  • Provides technical guidance and leadership to direct reports
  • Provides programmatic guidance and leadership to direct reports
  • Provides support as required to determine root cause analysis
  • Provide leadership and direction on product improvements
  • Directs team members in the development and revisions of design guidelines, design criteria, and standard practices utilizing the Rantec AS9100 Quality Management System Procedures.
  • Evaluates individual performance
  • Travel as needed to visit vendors and customers
  • Professionally communicates internally and externally (customers/suppliers)
  • Ability to work flexible hours and/or different shifts, if needed.
  • Ability to work in a safe professional manner adhering to all regulatory requirements including OSHA, EPA, State and Federal Regulations.
  • As the Companys success relies on the productivity of our team and adherence to customer product schedules, an essential function of this position is the ability to arrive to work on-time, and work each day, as scheduled.

Qualification Requirements:

  • This position requires access to our export-controlled commodities, technical data, technology and services. These items are restricted under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) to U.S. Citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents of the U.S. and properly licensed foreign persons. Therefore, employment is contingent on compliance with ITAR regulations and successfully obtaining and maintaining the necessary export authorization license from the U.S. Department of Commerces Bureau of Industry and Security, U.S. Department of States Office of Defense Trade Controls, or other applicable government agency.

Education and Experience
  • BS in Electrical Engineering degree, MS desirable
  • 10+ years applicable engineering experience
  • Applicant must have the ability to design AC/DC and DC/DC Converters.
  • In depth knowledge of military standards and experience designing to meet military requirements such as:
    • MIL-STD-704
    • MIL-STD-461
    • MIL-STD-1399
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of switch mode power converters. Knowledge of AC/DC rectification methods and system power analysis.
  • In-depth knowledge of conversion topologies (Flyback, Forward, Push-Pull, Phase-Shifted-Full-Bridge, etc) along with the ability to simulate and model designs.
  • Applicant must be able to develop concepts and product designs that are on the cutting edge of technology in the areas of high current, high power, low voltage, high efficiency, high density.
  • Working knowledge on the characteristics of magnetics (including inductor/transformer modeling), magnetization inductance, magnetization current, leakage inductance, intra-winding and inter-winding capacitance, self-resonant frequency, characteristics and limitations of magnetic cores, core saturation, core loss, high frequency losses, core reset, winding techniques for optimization of desired magnetics, and design of current transformers.
  • Applicant must be capable of developing test plans, procedures and test solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive hands-on power supply design experience and knowledge including but not limited to:
    • Stability analysis
    • MIL-STD-461 EMI design, analysis, and test
    • Low noise operation
    • Pulsed load
  • Ability to understand and provide direction to electrical engineering activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a lead role in directing members of a technical work group.
  • Proficient in leading root cause analysis, troubleshooting complex technical situations, and leading continuous improvement efforts
  • Demonstrated ability in solving difficult electrical engineering problems
  • Cost and Schedule Estimation
  • Proficient in leading root cause analysis, troubleshooting complex technical situations, and leading continuous improvement efforts
  • Proficient in electronic design for test, quality, reliability, manufacturability and EMC
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, and test processes
