Part time (0.5 FTE = 18.75 hours per week)

12 month parental leave contract

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are looking for a Disability Adviser | Kaitohutohu Hauātanga to join our Student Disability Services | Ratonga Hauātanga team within The Equity Office| Te Ara Tautika.

The main focus of this role is to support students with disabilities to reach their full academic potential. We do this by working with students to explore and understand their needs, by building effective support plans, and by collaborating with our academic colleagues, internal and external providers to put those plans in place. Our dedicated team is passionate about making students’ time at University a truly positive and accessible experience.

We have a range of excellent in-house services at the University that you will work closely with, leverage in your support plans and build strong relationships with, such as Student Health and Counselling and our Inclusive Learning team. You will also work closely with your colleagues in the Student Disability Service which includes Disability Advisers and Mental Health Advisers, to share ideas, troubleshoot issues and support each other.

Above all, we are looking for people with high-level communication and problem-solving skills who are able to work collaboratively with students to enable their success. In addition, we are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working to support people in the health, disability or mental health sectors, including case management and developing or carrying out support plans
  • Proven experience and Has the ability to assess complex needs, and to identify, and secure, specific and appropriate resources and strategies to reasonably meet those needs
  • Is a skilled communicator – able to communicate effectively with people from a range of backgrounds and advocate for students’ needs where required
  • Is able to work independently and manage their own priorities and workload, while being an active and supportive contributor to the team
  • Displays resilience and can stay calm in times of pressure, while remaining compassionate and empathetic
  • Is driven to achieve great outcomes, supported by good judgement skills and strong attention to detail

Registration as a health professional (such as an OT, Physio, or Social Worker) is preferred, but is not essential.
