Job Description Summary

Job Description

The Naj Lab is hiring a bioinformatician/programmer to participate in on-going research in large-scale genomics and transcriptomics projects in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRDs). This position seeks individuals to work semi-independently, providing bioinformatics support to investigators; managing and analyzing genome-wide genotyping and next-generation sequencing data; constructing data analysis pipelines; developing bioinformatics applications; and working with investigators to report and publish analytic findings from studies. We collaborate with multiple Penn groups and colleagues in major national and international research institutions to identify genomic risk factors for AD and related phenotypes in large cohorts, case-control studies, family studies, and biobanks. Furthermore, the lab benefits from close collaborations with talented programmers, analysts, and lab technologists in the Schellenberg and Wang groups in the Penn Neurodegeneration Genomics Center (PNGC; https://www.penn-ngc.org/ ). This position offers multiple opportunities for career development and academic advancement at PSOM, including the development of independent projects, participation and presenting in national and international meetings, and manuscript preparation and publication.

Bioinformatician B - Same duties as above with a greater level of independence in providing bioinformatics support to faculty and staff; developing and maintaining analysis pipelines and bioinformatics applications to work with genome-wide genotyping and next-generation sequencing data; and working with and providing assistance to investigators in developing genetic study designs, presenting results, and publishing findings.

Duties related to this position will include:Bioinformatician A: (a) Working with senior staff to develop, implement, and maintain high-quality pipelines for the processing of large quantities of genome-wide association study (GWAS) genotyping and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data;

Bioinformatician B : (a) Developing, implementing, and maintaining high-quality pipelines for the processing of large quantities of genome-wide association study (GWAS) genotyping and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data ;

Both Levels: (b) analyzing large-scale biomedical data including GWAS and NGS data with general statistical and statistical genetics methods and applications; (c) implementing and managing biomedical data with databases, query interfaces and web applications; (d) retrieving biomedical GWAS/NGS data from public resources and organizing the data for easy analysis and sharing; (e) preparing results in tabular, written summary, and graphical summary forms suitable for publication and peer review; (f) providing some bioinformatics support to faculty and their staff [includes performing computational analysis, exploration of parameter settings, comparisons of results across different methods, and the summary and visualization of data and results for presentation to faculty and their staff]; and (g) making modifications to existing algorithms and software and writing scripts to implement software on a server or high-performance computing environment.

This position is contingent on funding.

Qualification

Bioinformatician A : Qualified candidates should have (a) the minimum of a Bachelor's degree and three years of biomedical research data analysis experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in the areas of Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, Computer Science, Data Science, Informatics or similar fields; (b) competence in Python/Perl and R programming language; and (c) the ability to work with a multi-disciplinary team and communicate effectively with team members.

Bioinformatician B : Qualified candidates should have (a) the minimum of a Master's Degree and three years of biomedical research data analysis experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in the areas of Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, Computer Science, Data Science, Informatics or similar fields; (b) proficiency in Python/Perl and R programming language and experience with other languages/development environments; and (c) the ability to perform a leadership role/work closely with a multi-disciplinary team and communicate effectively with team members.

Both Levels: Additional requirements include (d) ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment and (e) excellent organizational and time management skills. Additional experience in other languages like C/C and SQL, statistical analysis software like SAS and Stata, and various development environments is highly desired. Prior experience with GWAS and NGS data or other experience with machine learning and data science a plus

The job pay range encompasses the full range of employees from new hires to the salaries of Penn employees with many years of experience and seniority and is not a precise indicator of salaries of new hires when looking at the top end.
