Please review the job details below.Maxar is seeking a motivated and skilled Thermal Hardware Engineer to join our team in Palo Alto, CA. In this role, you will work on satellites and spacecraft components for communications, Earth observation, exploration and on-orbit servicing and assembly. You will interpret each program's requirements in order to direct the mechanical design, manufacture, and integration of thermal hardware for spacecraft, including thermal blankets, shields, and similar hardware. You will interface with thermal engineering and analysis, space environments, mechanical design, AIT, and other functions to discuss and implement thermal hardware requirements. You will interpret 3D models and program requirements to build a 1:1 scale mockup of the spacecraft and to prototype thermal insulation and shielding. You will create thermal installation drawings to locate all blankets, shields, and bracketry to be used as a roadmap during integration. You will create or update designs for fiberglass, 3D printed, or metal shielding needed for temperature control or micro-meteoroid protection and release dimensioned drawings for technicians to follow. You will also lead design reviews, complete thermal hardware inspections, and support spacecraft thermal hardware integrations through all phases.Responsibilities:

  • Participates in research, design, development, analysis and evaluation of mechanical components, systems and packages for space or ground systems.
  • Assists in determining design requirements, generating engineering plans and documents.
  • Completes engineering design of thermal control & thermal protection hardware.
  • Develops engineering models and drawings.
  • Initiates engineering change requests & notices.
  • Supports prototyping, manufacturing and fit-checking of thermal hardware.
  • Prepares detailed technical reports on work performed.
  • Provides functional guidance to less experienced technical personnel.
  • Leads continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
  • or permanent resident.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or other engineering discipline. 4 additional years of related work experience may be substituted for a degree.
  • 2 years of experience in thermal hardware design or related area. A Master's degree can be counted as two years of experience.
  • Experienced in creating and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of experience in space industry passive thermal control and thermal protection.
  • College coursework in heat transfer.
  • Understanding of mathematics, physics, and material properties as they relate to mechanical components and systems.
  • Proficiency in computer aided design tools, such as AutoCAD and Creo Parametric.
  • Teamcenter or PLM Software experience.
  • Good spatial visualization ability.
  • Experience with hands-on production support.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, ability to meet deadlines and pay attention to details.
