Climbing Management Specialist

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR BA/BS Degree in Agriculture, natural resources, agronomy or related field of study

  • A sound understanding of NEPA and climbing management, knowledgeable, experience with the NEPA

  • environmental assessment process and requirements, experience with climbing safety procedures and climbing

  • management, and knowledgeable of the Ten Sleep Canyon and other climbing areas on the Bighorn National

  • Forest.

  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel

Duties:

Provide assistance to the Bighorn National Forest in developing climbing management plans on the Forest that include design features to minimize impacts to identified resources (e.g., impacts to soil, vegetation, geologic, water, cultural, wildlife, and social resources) and any climbing area restrictions needed for protection of sensitive resources. Other Forest needs include providing technical training to the Forest's seasonal climbing rangers.

  • Interdisciplinary Team Member (IDT) - Serve as a climbing management Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Bighorn National Forest Climbing Management Plan (CMP) IDTs, including the Ten Sleep Canyon CMP. 30%

  • Ten Sleep Canyon Climbing SME: -Participate in approximately 6 planning team meetings and small group meetings as scheduled throughout the project planning process. -Provide written comments (estimated 5 events) and recommendations to the Team Leader and NEPA Specialist following Team meetings and periodically throughout the process. 30%

  • Serve as SME for forest response to climbing specific public comments during NEPA process. 10%

  • Review drafts as the CMP and EA evolve and provide consultation in writing and via virtual meetings. 10%

  • Assist in producing and reviewing draft proposal, draft environmental assessment and final environmental assessment documents to assist the ID Team in plan development. Examples may be comparisons of other climbing management plans, strategies, education and monitoring programs, fixed anchor authorization processes, etc. 10%

  • Provide technical training to seasonal Climbing Rangers. 10%

  • Health and Safety Considerations: The ACES enrollee will provide climbing training; the enrollee will not be required to take a Forest Service specific safety training.

  • Required Safety Gear: See below.

  • Safety Gear Use: Safety equipment will be used when training the seasonal climbing rangers in skills and procedures directly related to preclimbing, climbing, rappelling, ascending, and advanced climbing skills for the lead climbing ranger.
