Purpose

The Driver Helper will assist the Recycling Collections Driver with moving recycling carts on an as needed basis and moving larger containers at multi-family units and businesses in the Minneapolis-St Paul metro area, while riding along on the recycling truck. This position is intended to be a temporary apprenticeship where the employee learns skills needed to be able to navigate routes and also gains driving experience while working towards a Class B license with air brake endorsement. Eureka Recycling will support and invest in their training and will offer access to our equipment in order to make this transition from the position of Driver Helper to Recycling Collections Driver. The expectation is that the Driver Helper would become a regular route driver within one year’s time and would make steady progress towards this goal, taking any necessary training, obtaining the Class B drivers permit, and taking the behind-the-wheel tests according to the recommended timing of the Fleet Manager/Director.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Assist Recycling Collections Driver with moving recycling carts and dumpsters as needed.

2. Assist Recycling Collections Driver at stops where there are multiple carts or dumpsters that require a dual lift/drag.

3. “Hang” on the back of a truck and get on and off to connect bins to the truck for tipping.

4. Appropriately communicate with residents in person and/or by providing informational materials regarding issues involving which materials can be recycled, and which cannot be.

5. Assist Recycling Collections Driver with reporting tasks as directed.

6. Work courteously and tactfully with drivers and other employees.

7. Demonstrate a thorough grasp of and commitment to the organization’s mission.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Preferred: High school diploma or G.E.D

2. Must have a Class D (standard) Driver’s License

3. Manual dexterity

4. Positive attitude

5. Punctual and dependable

6. Flexibility of work schedule

8. Ability and interest in working outdoors in all weather conditions.

9. Ability and willingness to be regularly exposed to noise, fumes, dust and odors typical of commercial vehicles which transport recyclable materials.

10. Ability to walk, lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) repeatedly for extended periods of time.

11. Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

12. Physically capable of frequently and repeatedly performing the following physical movements: climb in and out of recycling collection truck; bend at the waist and at the knees; reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; push and pull; twist and turn.

13. Ability to utilize hand and finger dexterity in order to operate a variety of buttons and levers.
