We have a 12 month contract position open with a large organization located in Davis CA. This is initially a 12 month contract and then could be extended for another 12 months, or there's potential for contract to hire.This position is for a Sr Windows Systems Administrator. The Windows Admin should have experience in large enterprise organizations, not small companies. It is highly desirable to have an ITIL ITSM certification as they need help documenting incident, response, and change management processes.

Description of functions / duties from the hiring manager:Enterprise Applications and Infrastructure Services (EAIS) is a sub-unit of Information & Technology. The Windows Administration Group (WAG) provides Windows system administration for campus infrastructure systems and client systems hosted at the campus Data Center locations. Under general direction of the WAG Supervisor, provide the highest level of technical support for customer systems running enterprise critical systems that support the mission of the University. Analyze, plan, design, develop, test, implement, administer, secure, and troubleshoot servers and associated hardware, operating systems, and software. This position works with a high degree of decision-making autonomy and has a high campus impact as it supports business-critical applications and services.

Essential Responsibilities:

50% SYSTEM AND APPLICATION ADMINISTRATION
  • Expert level systems administration support for campus enterprise infrastructure and client hosted systems, including Azure and VMWare virtual hosts.
  • Tier-3 technical support to customers for issues related to Windows applications and systems
  • Install, upgrade, maintain and support various Windows Operating Systems (OS) and provide technical support for various infrastructure and client applications, including IIS, SQL, Terminal Services, and active directory.
  • System log analysis, monitoring, ensuring security compliance, user management, system backup and recovery.
  • Setup, testing, and implementation of new applications.
  • Routine patching and systems maintenance on a regular basis.
  • Assist firewall admins with firewall and VPN configuration and troubleshooting.

20% PROJECT COORDINATION AND SERVICE MANAGEMENT
  • Provide leadership, strategic technical architectural planning, primary coordination and communication for one or more enterprise infrastructure services and projects
  • Effectively represent the organization to senior stakeholders

10% SCRIPTING AND PROGRAMMING
  • Create and maintain scripts to help automate the administration of the enterprise infrastructure and client hosted server environment
  • Develop system scripts to assist in administration of server, application, and user accounts management using PowerShell.
  • Configure programmatic access to other campus-wide resources using technology such as LDAP, SQL, web service calls.

10% COMMUNICATIONS/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, written and oral.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with other technical administrators and vendors.
  • Consult with system managers, application programmers, database administrators and campus clients on application support, utilities and operations system planning.

10% SECURITY SUPPORT
  • Provide daily administration and support as needed for host and network security monitoring and assistance to security staff in detection and follow-up to security related incidents for campus infrastructure
  • Install, configure, and maintain appropriate security applications for monitoring of security events.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Expert-level technical experience with system, hardware, and service administration of a complex distributed and integrated Windows environment.
  • Specialized knowledge of one or more enterprise applications, including but not limited to configuration and maintenance of SQL, Azure, IIS, Group Policy, Role Based Access Control, and customer applications.
  • Expert-level technical experience installing, configuring, and performance tuning Windows systems, both physical and virtual (Azure, VMWare).
  • Experience with configuration and using management tools such as SCOM.
  • Basic programming experience with PowerShell.
  • Experience with installing, configuring, hardening and tuning SQL databases.
  • Experience and skills to assess and implement computer security including the implementation of campus security standards to both workstations and servers
  • Experience and skill performing needs analysis, system planning, design, procurement, testing, implementation, administration, troubleshooting, problem remediation, documentation and capacity planning in a Windows environment for both Enterprise and client applications with the ability to produce and present project proposals, project plans, service agreements and status reports
  • Skills to learn and understand business needs and apply IT to meet those needs in a supportable manner, understanding the practical implications of the application of information technologies
  • Experience leading and participating in workgroups focusing on the technical aspects of implementing enterprise-wide distributed computing and computing security
  • Experience coordinating complex enterprise projects and services
  • Leadership skills to effectively collaborate with internal and external constituents in a manner to meet unit, department, project, campus, and organizational goals.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to consistently perform technical support and project management of small to medium sized projects with minimal direction
  • Ability to integrate computer and network systems with existing campus infrastructure, including authentication and directory services
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team
  • Ability to diplomatically give and receive directions and information
  • Ability to assess training needs then develop and teach technical subjects to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to evaluate new and emerging technologies to advise and implement migrations or transitions from older technologies
  • A degree in Information Technology or a related field.
