Who you are

As a Lead Carpenter you are skilled and passionate about your craft and enjoy working it as much as sharing and teaching it. You balance your skills in the form of craftsmanship and knowledge of construction. You will lead carpenters of all skill levels through the complete build phase of a residential remodel, addition, or new build. Your style of leadership is about serving the needs of the team, the project, our clients and the business as a whole. You lead by example with a high attention to quality and detail, and kindly instruct fellow team-members as needed while nurturing accountability. You lead from the front by virtue of competence and skill, with friendly, engaging enthusiasm, without requiring supervision or prompting.

As a Lead Carpenter you have a direct impact on Giraffe culture by modeling our core values each day. You have a positive can-do attitude that raises the skill level of your team and ensures a successful project from start through to completion.

The work you will be doing:

Review, understand, approve, and follow project plans, specifications, and estimates

Lead a build team through all levels of construction with a focus on quality and craftsmanship

Solve construction challenges while maintaining design intent, and work closely with designers as needed - you are able to build a box, and to think outside of it too

Find the appropriate balance between excellent execution and budget realities

Coordinate daily tasks to keep projects on time, on budget, and meeting client expectations

Manage a team of carpenters, tradespeople, and vendors

Drive productivity and meet daily production goals

Communicate with clients, manage their expectations and ensure change orders are processed accurately

Perform material take-offs and framing layouts

Implement best practices and industry standard construction methods

Promote leadership by example

Advocate for your team and the client with the goal of delighting both

Provide positive training and direction for carpenters and laborers as needed

Empower your team to exceed expectations for quality, craftsmanship, schedule, and budget

Skills you will need:

10+ years of relevant experience in the construction industry, focus in custom, high-quality residential remodeling and new building is preferred

2+ years of experience as a residential lead carpenter or similar management position

A sense of design and appreciation for aesthetic

Building skills include framing, material take-offs, siding, window, and door installation, interior and exterior trim, finish work, and cabinet installation

Artisan level carpentry skills preferred

Ability to read and interpret architectural floor plans, elevations, shop drawings, and structural plans

Desire to train apprentice carpenters using an inclusive management style

Skilled in leading a jobsite while also working as a team member and promoting a positive culture

Ability to communicate with clients, subcontractors, coworkers, and designers

Reliable transportation to a variety of worksites throughout Washtenaw County

Self motivated and able to perform duties with minimal supervision
