Position Description for CFD/Wind-Tunnel Integration - CFD and Experimental SupportThis job entails CFD analysis and experimental support for studying supersonic wind-tunnel flow quality as affected by the flow through the settling chamber and nozzle. The specific wind tunnels of interest are the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel test section 2 (LUPWT) and the Ames Unitary 9-by 7-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel. The tasks will include, among others, CAD work to generate surface geometry, grid generation, and CFD solutions for the range of flow conditions expected in the facilities. Various portions of the wind tunnels may need to be simulated to reduce the time and expense of performing the simulations. The CFD simulation work will also be done for a 30%-scale model of the LUPWT settling chamber and nozzle. The job will include supporting testing of the model in Test Cell 3 at the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory at Ames. This work is key to developing and validating flow-quality improvements for the LUPWT, which will hopefully be implemented in the wind tunnel during FY22.Position RequirementsThe job requires skills in several areas primarily associated with CFD simulations. Skills in using CAD software is critical to the first step in developing the geometries for simulation. Experience with grid generation software is required. Familiarity with Pointwise is preferred since it is the tool available at Ames. Experience with CFD software is required and familiarity with the Kestrel code is preferred, again due to its availability at Ames for use on the NAS computers.A BS in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering is required as is ship.EOE, including Disability and VETS
