#6508 Seeking an IT System Engineer - Infrastructure in the Goleta, CA area for a contract position.Under the supervision of the Director of Technology Operations, the IT System Engineer - Infrastructure is responsible for implementing day to day IT program requirements to ensure that IT infrastructure and data center elements and associated systems are functioning efficiently, effectively, and securely for a 24x7, mission critical, high availability, multisite enterprise in support of roughly 6,000 users. This is a multi-discipline position that requires breadth and depth of knowledge across a range of technical domains.

  • Performs design, implementation, administration, optimization, configuration, and support of server hardware platforms, Window servers, virtualization platforms, storage platforms, database instances, email technologies, security technologies, and disaster recovery and business continuity platforms.
  • Creates and maintains inventories, run books, documentation of all aspects of the environment, and process and procedure manuals.
  • Acts as a project resource for IT initiatives requiring infrastructure technical input and management.
  • Collaborate with IT staff and multiple contracted managed service providers.
  • Performs monitoring, health checks, patching and upgrades.
  • Acts as tier II and III support for infrastructure related incidents and problems.
  • Adheres to ITIL guidelines for change management, asset management, incident management, service request management, and documentation.

Technical Requirements
  • Expert level understanding of a wide range of infrastructure related technologies such as physical server platforms, Windows server, virtualization platforms, network technologies, storage technologies, database platforms, email technology, information security, disaster recovery and business continuity.
  • Ability to design, implement, administer, manage, troubleshoot, optimize, monitor, and upgrade enterprise grade infrastructure technology and related systems within an enterprise level, 24x7, multi-site, organization consisting of nearly 6,000 users and 400 servers.

Specific technical requirements include:
  • Server hardware platforms: Enterprise high density and stand-alone x86 server hardware platforms such as HP BladeSystem, Dell PowerEdge, and other brands.
  • Windows Server: Expert level knowledge and understanding of Windows Server operations and roles such as clustering, file services, printing, active directory, certificates, deployment services, patching, IIS, DNS, DHCP, performance monitoring, event logging, and PowerShell scripting.
  • Virtualization platforms: Expert level VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi hypervisor operations such as cloning, snapshots, templates, high availability, virtual networks, vMotion, and storage vMotion. Familiarity with other virtualization platforms such as Citrix Xen, Microsoft Hyper-V, and cloud services such as Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • Network technologies: Expert level understanding of LAN, WAN, and storage network technology. This includes hardware devices such as firewalls, switches, routers, load balancers, and physical cable plants. It also includes software protocols, services, and ports such as TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, SMB, HTTP, FTP, and others.
  • Storage technologies: Expert level understanding of local, SAN, and NAS storage technologies from vendors such as Nimble, NetApp, Pure, and EMC. This also includes association protocols and services such as block level storage, CIFS/SMB/NFS mounts, iSCSI mounts, replication, and snapshotting.
  • Database technology: Administrative knowledge of MS SQL Server and other databases. Knowledge of clustering, high availability, backups, and log handling is also required.
  • Email technology: High level knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server, including mailbox management, database management, high availability, clustering, security, and anti-spam products.
  • Security: High level understanding of information security principles including anti-virus systems, patching and packaging systems, encryption products and protocols, PKI infrastructure, and system hardening.
  • Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: High level understanding of DR/BC technology and methodology, backups, restores, replication, and associated systems from a variety of vendors such as StorageCraft and Commvault.

Related Work Experience

Minimum: 1 year of general system, network, or IT administrator or support experience and 3 years of dedicated data center, infrastructure, or enterprise experience.

Preferred: 2 years of general system, network, or IT administrator or support experience and 5 years of dedicated data center, infrastructure, or enterprise experience.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or combination of education and experience, using the standard of two years of experience equals one year of college.
