Function of Position: STAR labs intern with the following skills to assist in model machining/fabrication. Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in small teams is a must. Expected to support at 20hrs/week during school year. Support may be increased during breaks/summer.Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use basic shop equipment such as band saw, disk sander, drill press, manual lathe, and manual mill.
  • Setup and operation of CNC mills and lathes
  • Interpret engineering drawings, cut rough stock, set up features and set up tooling
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Nature of Position Challenges: Complex requirements for data acquisition, instrumentation, and control systems required considerable creativity and judgement in accomplishing tasks that support project, cost, and schedule requirements.Supervisor Guidance: General and specific guidance4 shall be provided by the STAR Labs Supervisor. Technical guidance and training may also be provided by the STAR Labs technicians.Essential Functions: Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position: Visual and physical contact with test system hardware and installed test articles. Multiple workstation assignments (office, test facility, control room, laboratory, shops, etc.). Transportation of notebooks, drawings, forms, sensors, etc. required. Ability to hear normal conversation. One eye (minimum) correctable to 20/20. Ability to distinguish eight colors on basic panel displays and wiring. Ability to manipulate small and delicate instruments and wiring.Description of Work Environment: Work is accomplished in the STAR Labs shops and offices. Movement is required between these work areas as well as trips to the clients or user's facility. Must be able to use respiratory protection. Some work areas are high in noise.Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks: Hand and machine tools, computers, calculators, CNC machine tools. Criticality of Attendance: Work assignments are usually during normal work hours (about 0630 - 1600). 20 hrs/week during school year. A regular attendance schedule is required to maintain team effectiveness.Other essential Functions: must be able to obtain a NASA badge and gain access to work facilities.Qualifications:The following skills to assist in model machining and fabrication are required:Training and ability to use basic shop equipment such as band saw, disk sander, drill press, manual lathe, and manual mill. Possess basic manual machining skills and experience with setup and operation of CNC mills and lathes. Interpret engineering drawings, cut rough stock, set up fixtures, set up tooling, and operate CNC equipment. Experience with SURFCAM and HASS mills and lathes a plus. Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in small teams is a must.EOE, including disability/vets
