At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to developing and commercializing genomic-driven solutions to address global challenges. We are currently seeking a Systems Engineer to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA.The Systems Engineer is responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure and ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values.

Responsibilities:
  • To support a large-scale, multi-site, HPC environment (High Performance Computing), and back-end infrastructures.
  • The scope of the work will be responsible for architecture, maintenance, outage troubleshooting, network troubleshooting, package installation, configuration, as well as other related day to day duties
  • Creating and maintaining documentation
  • This is a multi-facet environment and would require this individual to be nimble with both time and required skill-sets.

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.
  • Over 7-10 years of system engineering, infrastructure design, and support experience.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and maintain healthy professional relationships.
  • Must be very detail oriented with the ability to run multiple projects in a prioritized fashion.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Office 365
  • Experience working in mixed PC/Mac/Linux environment.
  • Expert knowledge in NAS, SAN with strong emphasis in Netapp storage appliances and Data ONTAP.
  • Strong VMware ESX, vSphere, and Virtual Center expertise.
  • Strong networking knowledge and ability with WAPs, routers, firewalls, and switches with strong emphasis in Meraki, Cisco, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Cloud computing with strong emphasis in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or MS Azure.
  • Strong experience working with cloud infrastructures and services.
  • Very familiar with information security best practices.
  • Experience working within a high availability and disaster recovery paradigm.
  • Seasoned experience maintaining enterprise class server hardware located in offsite data centers and colocations.
  • The ability to quickly install new servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with project and operational requirements.
  • Ability to carry out performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
  • Work with members of individual teams and third-party service providers to implement new technologies and to diagnose and resolve system and platform application failures.
  • Research and recommend innovative solutions to address company’s business needs.
  • Participate in On-Call support activities.
  • Occasional day travel required to our facility in Imperial Valley (2hrs away). Must have valid driver’s license.

Desired Certifications and Qualifications:
  • Microsoft MCSE, MCITP.
  • VMware VCP.
  • NetApp NCDA.
  • Cisco CCNA.
