Community Outreach and Engagement Manager

The Community Outreach & Engagement Manager serves in the marketing and fundraising department and is responsible for the strategic engagement of various stakeholder groups, with the aim to further Black Dog Animal Rescue’s mission and services. The position is primarily responsible for cultivating and enhancing relationships with underserved communities and expanding program and service awareness and accessibility to those communities. Through these interactions and in collaboration with other staff and volunteers, the incumbent will help to identify new and enhanced opportunities for program and service delivery (as well as identifying and addressing barriers to these services), donor prospecting, and volunteer recruitment and engagement. This position will also serve to assist the development and marketing manager - helping to execute on the annual fundraising strategy, organizing events, and making public appearances.

Position Summary:

  • Serves as a public ambassador for the organization, actively seeking out and creating speaking engagements, tabling opportunities, networking events and other ways in which to present the organization’s mission, vision, values, and services to the community. Creates presentation and outreach materials.
  • Connects with the public in order to identify underserved communities, needed resources, and opportunity for new and enhanced relationships. This includes pets and people in need of support as well as potential volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Assists in ensuring the organization meets its annual fundraising goals by working closely with the Marketing and Development Manager to coordinate messaging and public appearances, as well as acting as back up or additional help as needed for executing the annual fundraising strategy.
  • Helps to create outreach materials (including printed and digital resources) and to ensure that all programs and services are accessible to spanish-speaking individuals, families, and businesses.
  • Participates in the organization's annual planning, budgeting, and strategy process to ensure alignment with the strategic plan and community values and needs. Tracks and records ongoing efforts toward identified goals and objectives.
  • Other duties as needed: other duties may include, but are not limited to, providing volunteer program support and training, staff training and education, assisting with animal care and adoptions, cleaning and maintenance, media interactions and social media management.

Knowledge Skills, and Abilities: This position will require a wide range of skills. Candidates need not possess all of them in order to qualify; however, a desire to identify and correct skills deficits along the way will be helpful.

  • Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, e-mail communications
  • Shared files, media relations, fundraising, and donor relations
  • Powerpoint, public speaking, community engagement, cultivating relationships
  • Planning and strategy, fundraising, event planning, graphic design, copywriting
  • Transform ideas into plans and execute on those plans, lead a team, learn new skills, adapt to a changing environment, work independently, define benchmarks and goals, convey the organization’s mission, vision, and values, build relationships, get stuff done!

Education and Experience:

Minimum high school graduate or GED. Preferred 2 years experience in community development or organizing, fundraising and event planning, nonprofit administration. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish.

Working Conditions and Travel:

Office conditions may include exposure to animals, animal-related noise and smells, construction, and interactions with various stakeholder groups including volunteers and the public. Long hours at a computer as well as frequent visits offsite at various indoor and outdoor community events and venues is required.

Anticipate some travel, use of a personal vehicle required.
