We are seeking dynamic and outgoing individuals with excellent analytical and interpersonal skills to join a new team to work as a Content Acquisition Manager across the open research publishing platform F1000Research, and a range of related titles.

The key purpose of these roles are to recruit and then lead a highly efficient and dedicated team of Content Acquisition Editors to bring in high-quality article submissions across a range of subject areas from Life Sciences and Medicine, to Physical Sciences & Engineering, through to Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities. This will involve recruiting and training a team of Editors, working with relevant Publishing and Editorial teams to develop and be responsible for a content development and commissioning strategy, and work with the Head of Content Acquisition to lead the teams and to refine the strategy as vital to ensure an ongoing solid pipeline of new article content to meet defined targets. The role will also be hands-on in analysing research fields and growth areas, establishing relationships and increasing loyalty with the wider research community, as well as educating these communities about the open research publishing model. Also responsible for implementing and refining strategies for content development and generate ideas to support the development of new strategies for increasing article submissions across the platforms.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of developing and delivering a content development strategy, and ideally have experience of leading a team. An active interest in open access, open data and open science, as well as in publishing and related matters.

What you will be doing:

  • Recruit and train a team of Content Acquisition Editors
  • Lead, performance manage and develop a group of Content Acquisition Editors as direct reports, fostering a culture of high-level performance, motivation, quality, efficiency and innovation in the team helping to encourage new ideas and constructive feedback
  • Contribute to driving a culture of high-performance and continuous improvement through demonstrating how to effectively develop and grow expert capabilities
  • Ensure objectives for direct reports are clear and are supported and incentivised to achieve goals
  • Contribute to the setting of the organizational culture, acting as an ambassador both internally and externally and leading by example
  • Work with the Head of Content Acquisition to set commissioning targets, and monitor and report on progress against targets on a regular basis
  • Work closely with the Publishing and Editorial teams and the Head of Content Acquisition and other Content Acquisition Managers to monitor and refine the overarching strategy, as well as the individual strategies of the Editors, to deliver an ongoing proven pipeline of new article content to meet defined targets
  • Deliver against targets for submissions across a range of geographies and/or subject areas on the platforms
  • Liaise with marketing to ensure coordinated and effective development and delivery of supportive resources and marketing activities
  • Regularly conduct structured analysis of relevant academic fields using a range of tools to determine areas of growth against a range of key parameters and hence potential opportunities for commissioning
  • Introduce research communities to F1000’s open research activities and associated publishing platforms
  • Network and engage with key target researchers and research groups through a range of approaches including 1:1 discussion, presentations/webinars, conference attendance etc.
  • Connect with high level researchers to engage them in discussion regarding potential editorial projects (thematic collections and submissions) and ultimately recruit them to act as key ambassadors and advocates to encourage submissions from their community
  • Build strong networks with a range of research communities, and maintain regular contact with researchers regarding editorial projects
  • Network within the open science and open data communities to ensure content is targeted and developed effectively.

Qualifications

What we are looking for:

  • Publishing experience, ideally in commissioning
  • Line management experience, ideally of an efficient and effective commissioning team
  • Data and process driven excellent analytical skills, and strong familiarity with key databases and tools to analyse and monitor scientific fields and identify growth areas
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills with a strong customer focus
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Strong organisational skills, efficiency and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise effectively and to work to (often contending) deadlines
  • A positive and proactive approach to problem solving both in daily tasks and more complex troubleshooting
  • Able to work independently and proactively
  • Excellent teamwork skills and able to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels
  • A high level of digital literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers)
  • Passionate about open access, open data and open science, and the move to open research practices more generally as well as in academic publishing more broadly
  • Multilingual across English, German and ideally some other European languages
  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent F1000 at external events

This role is open to candidates in all locations across Germany. Taylor & Francis has multiple options for how employees can work based on their role – be that in the Office, at home or somewhere in between.

This role will be based remotely from home although occasional travel to our offices will be required.
