DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW We deliver data and technology services and, through collaboration with partners, transform the role of Information Technology to advance the UC mission.

POSITION SUMMARY The network manager leads a team of two senior network engineers and one network administrator for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP). The team manages the UCOP network at several on-site locations, two off-site data centers, and in AWS. The manager provides hands-on technical expertise; oversees the work of the team, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance assessment; and fosters an inclusive work environment. This is a critical position that supports the work of the larger organization by ensuring the team maintains service levels, adheres to project schedules, and achieves goals. The network team provides on-call support during off hours. Flexible work hours are available to accommodate off-hours work. Occasional travel may be required with notice. The position is part of the Information Technology Services department, reporting to the director of infrastructure, and collaborates with other infrastructure units: operations, system administration, service management, hosting, database administration, and other infrastructure and security services.

Responsibilities 45% Expected to be a hands-on network manager with technical depth, vision, and ability to innovate. Responsible for deployment, configuration, and management of all UCOP network infrastructure in California and cloud sites within the US. 15% Collaborates with Infrastructure, ITS, Building Services, Telecom, Project Managers, Senior Management, and vendors to manage network deployments, procure necessary equipment/services and maintain operational activities. 15% Manage site documentation, capacity planning, asset inventory, and hardware sparing functions at our data centers and in AWS. Establishes and recommends changes to policies or procedures which affect the IT department. 10% Has financial responsibility to monitor equipment/support expenses and make recommendations to control costs through upgrading of appropriate systems or use of new technologies. Responsible for evaluating hardware, software and tools in use by selecting and procuring the recommendations within a budget. 10% Responsible for recruiting, hiring, managing, and mentoring the team in accordance with UC policies and procedures. Ensures appropriate and periodic performance assessments, motivates employees, and encourages professional development. Fosters an innovative, inclusive, and supportive work environment 5% Other duties as assigned supporting infrastructure team goals/objectives.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting IP routing/switching technologies and protocols including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, HSRP, and VRRP in a dual-stack IPv4/6 environment.
  • Experience with configuring ASA firewalls and load balancers such as F5 or Netscalers.
  • Thorough knowledge of subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment and direction.
  • Demonstrated, hands-on experience building and managing a diverse team and cultivating a supportive and inclusive work environment.
  • Experience analyzing situations and problem solving under pressure. Including determining risk and setting priorities based on the analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within the technical environment.
  • Experience leading a team working in a fast-paced team environment with limited supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to individuals and groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
  • Must have knowledge of operating policies and procedures and the ability to determine a course of action based on these guidelines.
  • Experience managing and configuring equipment in remote sites both on-premise and in AWS while ensuring successful operations of those devices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of ITIL Operational and Service Delivery principles.
  • Familiar with standard procurement processes as it relates to product purchases. Includes reviewing, understanding product and software maintenance agreements terms and conditions.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience managing an information technology organization.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Candidates may be primarily remote, but will be required to be onsite (Oakland, CA) for network related incidents and occassional projects. Candidates must be located within a reasonable driving distance ( 2 hours) to Oakland, CA.
