Job Description

Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Agricultural Technician I (Seasonal) is responsible for participating in activities pertinent to the biological control of the glassy-winged sharpshooter.

Grow and help sustain various GWSS host plants in order to allow sufficient production of GWSS eggs used to mass-rear GWSS biological control agents (i.e. egg parasitoids).

Provide technical input for pest control practices in greenhouses to supply healthy host plants for GWSS rearing.

Rear GWSS to harvest eggs necessary for rearing biological control agents used to control GWSS and the spread of Pierce’s Disease.

Participate in routine greenhouse maintenance (i.e. irrigation line check-up/repair request, monitoring of temperature/lighting, setup of pest-monitoring traps, cleaning of insect-rearing cages and greenhouse floor/walls).

Electronically document daily insect-rearing activities and other pertinent data for use in production level and related evaluation reports.

Participate in the release of biological control agents at various field locations throughout several counties (i.e. Kern, Tulare, Ventura, Madera, and Fresno) using a State vehicle.

Collect GWSS egg samples from preferred host plants to determine seasonal density and recovery rate (i.e. parasitization) of released biological control agents.

Conduct identification of biological control agents under mass production and common parasitoid species emerging from GWSS eggs sampled during post-release survey.

Participate in biological control experiments aimed to improve the mass-rearing system of biological agents.

Ensure proper operation of a State vehicle by routinely checking its condition to meet CDFA Defensive Driver policy and required safety standards.

Safely utilize laboratory equipment and materials by thoroughly reading and following user instructions, safety labels, and other precautions.

Candidates may perform these essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
