Adult Basic Education - High School Completion Substitute InstructorVacancy Notice:Tuesday, September 14, 2021 Application Deadline:Wednesday, September 29, 2021 by 4:30 PM CST Position Type:Classified Hours:Part Time Department:Adult Education and Literacy Program Reports To:High School Completion Program Coordinator Job SummaryThis position teaches classes on a substitute basis to students studying to complete the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) in the High School Completion (HSC) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs at the Hawkeye Community College Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center as part of the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program. Plan and deliver whole group instruction in the areas of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies to help the students prepare for the exam in order to earn their HSED. Integrate College and Career Readiness Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, and CASAS GOALS competencies. Classes operate on a quarter system under managed enrollment.Essential Job FunctionsImportant responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Teach morning and/or evening classes on a substitute basis as needed.

Teach math, reading, writing, science, and social studies as needed.

Communicate with the regular classroom teacher prior to and following the teaching assignment.

Follow and/or create standards-based lesson plans, activities, assignments, and assessments that are tailored to specific skill levels.

Teach face-to-face classes with some online components.

Utilize classroom technology and integrate digital literacy into lessons.

Maintain daily attendance records and paperwork.

Maintain integrity of assessments.

Identify areas of student need and differentiate instruction.

Complete required annual professional development.

Learn and apply new strategies, methods, and initiatives.

Maintain student confidentiality.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in education or teaching.

Demonstrated ability to work with and provide customer service for diverse populations.

Demonstrated ability to work with students who have widely varying instructional levels and reading abilities.

Demonstrated ability to explain and review elementary through high school level science and social studies topics.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally both in writing and in speaking.

Demonstrated ability to incorporate classroom technology and utilize Google Applications.

Flexible schedule.

PreferencesK-12 Teaching certification.

Degree, certification, or endorsement in Reading, Literacy, Writing, Math, Social Studies, or Science.

Teaching experience with adults.

Substitute teaching experience.

Teaching experience in AEL, HSC, ABE, GED, HiSET, or ELL.

Employment StatusHourly, part time position on an as needed basis. Classes are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday evenings during fall and spring semesters.Working ConditionsRequires skills for succeeding in a classroom and/or clinical environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in a classroom, lab, and/or clinical setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours.
