This role will partner closely multiple product engineering groups within the organization and will lead an incredible team of infrastructure, site reliability (SRE), and DevOps engineers.Job DescriptionMachineQ, a Comcast company, is creating the platform and products that will deliver the Internet of Things (IoT) services of the future. We are looking for a growth minded, action-oriented Director of Engineering with a broad background in building cloud infrastructure and operating complex distributed systems by promoting system observability, metrics, and reliability. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will thrive in a fast-paced, agile environment and support an engineering culture where innovation is balanced with predictable delivery and operational excellence. Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and operations of common development and production product infrastructure across all MachineQ products.
  • Set the technical direction for the team and anticipate scaling-related challenges via thoughtful planning, modeling, and load testing.
  • Design and drive the implementation of long term strategic technical initiatives to meet business, product growth targets, and SLA targets.
  • Contribute to the architecture of MachineQ products by partnering with product teams to ensure the systems can meet security (DevSecOps), availability, and performance targets.
  • Assist with the monitoring, tracking, and analysis of infra and application performance metrics.
  • Set organizational standards by evangelizing automation methods, promoting the capture of appropriate metrics, and increasing the observability of applications.
  • Ensure that complex production issues get the appropriate engineering support to minimize impact to customers.
  • Organize the team to provide rotating on-call production support and take the lead in high severity incidents that involve multiple teams or services.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • BS (or higher) in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent technical experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of people management experience with an engineering team
  • Demonstrated experience scaling customer facing SaaS applications and cloud infrastructures from 100s per second to 1000s per second to 10000s per second.
  • Experience building and deploying distributed and robust cloud native (Azure, AWS, GCP) infrastructure and applications.
  • Previous experience as a software developer, preferably domain expertise within reliability engineering and/or high availability/throughput production environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with containerization and microservices solutions (e.g Kubernetes, Azure Kubernetes Service, Amazon EKS, Amazon Farsgate).
  • Experience operating and scaling structured relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS), unstructured data stores (e.g. MongoDB, DynamoDB), and time series databases.
  • Experience operating, deploying, and scaling event streaming platforms (e.g. Apache Kafka, Azure Event Hub, AWS Kinesis/SQS).
  • Experience operating, deploying, and managing queueing infrastructure (e.g. RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, Amazon SQS).
