Shop Floor Systems Solution Architect to join our team in Muscatine, IA! As the Shop Floor Systems Solution Architect, you will lead efforts to develop both the technical and solution architectures needed in HNI's Manufacturing Shop Floor Systems area. You will work with HNI Enterprise Architecture standards where possible, and develop the Shop Floor systems solution and help set the standards for the Shop Floor Systems application, services, hardware / device, and other infrastructure. You will work with the business users and IT Business Analysts to analyze business needs and propose application and technical designs with associated costs and timelines to best solve the business problem. You will collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, other Solution Architects, business partners, and the project team to proactively identify potential areas where business processes/policies/procedures may require change. You will play a key role in translating business requirements into system changes (functional, technical specifications with a focus on the system technical solution design) and determining the holistic future state. This role requires leading and driving consensus in a constantly changing environment, providing solutions that solve both short and long-term needs of the business, and subsequent implementation of the organization's technical vision. The Shop Floor Systems Solution Architect is responsible for translating client business functional requirements into specific Application Development solutions and help set the standards for these. This includes working with client personnel and executives to identify functional requirements and subsequently working with and leading others in the identification, justification and design of the client's solution. Must be able to perform across all phases of the development life cycle. You will be responsible for a wide range of design activities from requirements analysis through systems, application and/or process design specifications. At the senior level, the position requires significant knowledge across multiple platforms, processes or architectures, as well as broad knowledge of new technologies and will include directing the design efforts of less experienced architects. Some of the essential aspects of the position include:
  • Analyzes the business needs, define s detailed requirements, validates proposed application technical designs with the business community, and recommends potential alternatives, including business and technical considerations.
  • Ensures sound application and/or technical design, making sure that design considerations are incorporated into the functional and technical design specifications, making sure we have a holistic technical design considering our infrastructure, Data Base and Integration technologies, that the application performs well, is reliable, the data is secure and protected, and can be supported as a reasonable cost.
  • Ensures that the Technical Design aligns with our Enterprise Architecture standards and technical application management standards, and work with the Enterprise and Solution Architects, other Technical Architects, and the Business to gain approval through our project process - even if the solution deviates from our standards.
  • Reviews functional and technical specifications and validates design/development specifications with technical development teams
  • Identifies and coordinates with stakeholder technical teams to ensure the delivery of a holistic application design
  • Creates and communicates application design overviews and alternatives to technical and business leadership in order to provide understanding of application design direction and to gain consensus support of the recommended design approach
  • Ensures application designs are aligned with application strategies and identify opportunities, challenges, and migration roadmaps to support strategies
  • Educate stakeholders of application architecture risks to influence change that supports business and IT strategies
  • Collaborate to develop and present business cases for IT investment strategy needed to support application architecture roadmap
What it takes:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or related disciplines
  • 5+ years of experience some the following process areas in the Manufacturing / Shop Floor Systems: Shop floor scheduling & sequencing; work in process mgt., part & BOM mgt., Inventory and warehouse management, replenishment (e.g. KANBAN, min/max/ picking triggers, etc.), machine automation & control, workstation automation (work Instructions, poke yokes, device control, etc.); quality mgt., production execution and tracking, work order mgt, visual and event management, CAD>CAM, etc.
  • 5+ years of IT experience; among which minimum 3 years experience in application architecture design (functional and Technical); also, in code development.
  • Familiarity with information systems management practices: Code management, Software Development Life Cycle, ITIL, Project Management methods
  • Experience in functional and regression testing
  • Experience with multiple and diverse technology environments in the Shop Floor Systems area. Manufacturing Execution Systems; SCADA - Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems; OPC - Open System Communication Protocols like Kepware, ModBUS, etc.
  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technologies and methods preferred. Understanding of SOAP, Restful APIs, and XML is preferred.
  • Specific experience in ThingWorx (from PTC). Being able to define standards for an open service based on microservices.
  • At least 3+ years' experience in SQL, JSON, JavaScript is required
  • Experience with relational database technologies e.g. Oracle RDBMS, SQLServer, etc.
  • Being able to understand and define the data model and relationships between objects and entities (ERD - Entity Relationship Diagram)
  • Must be visionary and strategic in approach, and demonstrated ability to apply technical architectural disciplines to solve business problems.
  • Strong expertise in a given process and system area. Possibly even lead, and provide thought -leadership, internal or external communities in this area of expertise.
  • Strong technical understand of an application area and its configuration and /or technical area and the technical components.
  • Strong understanding of implementation processes and best practices in application architecture
  • Must work independently with minimal direction with superior organizational skills
  • Strong relationship building and influencing skills with the ability to drive change
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to articulate technical concepts in business terms and present to management
  • Ability to envision and detail out design to meet current and anticipated future business needs.
  • Extensive business and/or systems analysis skills that support applications development
  • Proven track record of delivering within deadlines with the ability to prioritize projects
