About the job:Under general supervision, plans, organizes, develops and implements an organizational-wide Infectious Disease and Epidemiology Program in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern such functions.What you will do:Oversees and performs surveillance and epidemiology activities, including the collection, analysis and reporting of data as well as edpidemic and outbreak investigations.

Provides management, leadership and supervision to staff assisting her in infection control functions.

Assists in the case management of patients with communicable diseases or drug-resistant organisms, to include the appropriate identification, placement, isolation, and discharge of these patients.

Applies a sound epidemiological method and statistical technique to identify and solve problems, evaluate processes and measure outcomes.

Communicates with hospital and medical staff to acquire additional information about potential infections or sources of infection and helps to identify control measures.

Directs the development and provision of consultative and educational services to employees, volunteers, physicians, patients, families, Occupational Health Services, Mercy Home Care, Mercy Medical Services, and other healthcare facilities and settings across the continuum of care, individuals and the community.

Oversees the management of the Infectious Disease Clinic.

Directs the development, evaluation, revision and implementation of system-wide infection control policies/procedures and guidelines.

Directs the implementation of and is accountable for the organizations compliance with regulations, standards and recommendations in accordance with local, state and national organizations.Participates in the identification, investigation, reporting and follow-up of reportable diseases and diseases necessitating contact tracking and exposure work-ups as mandated by the local, state and federal Departments of Health.

Facilitates Mercy's Infection Control Committee meeting, maintains minutes and reports activities to the Quality Board and other committees as needed.

Participates in Trinity-wide initiatives to improve quality, safety and infection prevention. Includes, but not limited to, sepsis collaboration, employee influenza vaccination, electronic laboratory and Public Health reporting for Meaningful Use.

Provides leadership in Mercy's participation with the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative Initiative including the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) and Partnership for Patients.

Collects and analyzes data to be used in benchmarking and/or identification of best practice and performance improvement efforts. Utilizes Process Excellence and other continuous quality improvement methodologies to support and/or lead performance improvement teams designed to improve clinical outcomes.

Reports data as required to external accrediting organizations (includes JCAHO, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Trinity Health and NDNQI (National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators) outcomes to meet requirements for attainment of Magnet status.

Actively participates in Infection Control Committee; participates in the Safety or Products Evaluation Committee and any other Committees as necessary and so delegated.

Alerts the Risk Manager to potential risk/liability issues relating to Infection Control and employee safety.

Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.

Is responsible for creating an environment of organizational learning about patient safety and medical/health care error reduction, supports sharing of knowledge, and fosters behavioral changes to improve patient safety.

What we are looking for:Requires a B.S.N. or BA in Nursing with a current Iowa license.

Requires minimum of three to five year’s clinical experience in an acute care hospital with demonstrated knowledge in patient care practices and a minimum of five years of infection control experience. Prior management experience preferred.

Must possess basic knowledge or interest in Epidemiology and Statistics, Microbiology and Education.

Must be willing to improve professional effectiveness by attending in-services, workshops, and training sessions. Requires Board Certification in Infection Control or willingness to obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

Must be willing to carry a beeper/cell phone and provide 24-hour accountability.

Excellent interpersonal/listening skills to interact effectively with individuals of all backgrounds, experience and educational levels.

Excellent written/oral communication skills. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with staff, physicians, and other allied health professionals.

Individual should be dynamic, creative and intelligent.

Successful individual should be a mature executive with a professional appearance/demeanor, excellent character, integrity and commitment.
