GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

In Casper, Wyoming, the District Attorney's Office has an immediate opening for an Assistant District Attorney. The position handles the prosecution of misdemeanor-level offenses. The position prepares a variety of court documents and argues motions before trial court; conducts jury and bench trials; confers with investigative agencies; plans, coordinates, and institutes activities related to the prosecution of misdemeanor cases; coordinates case investigations with law enforcement agencies; checks instructs or directs the work of their assigned legal assistant as necessary.

Candidates must currently be licensed or waiting on bar results to practice in Wyoming and be in good standing with the Wyoming State Bar and must be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and responsibility.Human Resource Contact: Alice Saldana alice.saldana2@wyo.gov 307-777-7667ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Initiates prosecution of individuals for misdemeanor cases.

  • Reviews investigative reports and works with law enforcement officers and agencies to ensure that all offense elements have been investigated and ensure that the defendant's rights are not violated.

  • Represents the State of Wyoming in jury trials and bench trials.

  • Confers and negotiates with defense attorneys on pending cases, using communication and persuasive skills to resolve the case.

  • Meets with crime victims through the Victim/Witness Coordinator assigned to the case and ensures their rights are observed and that they have an opportunity to participate in the criminal justice system.

  • Handles core assignments: rules making, contracts, documents review, client counseling, legal research, opinion writing, appellate briefs, pre-trial assignments (dispositive motions, discovery), trial assignments (preparing witnesses, exhibits, assists in developing & executing strategy, contested cases), oral arguments, settlements.

  • Handles a variety of moderate to serious legal matters and can resolve moderate cases with general supervision; assist in preparing more complex legal matters.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of criminal laws and jury instructions

  • Knowledge of the criminal laws and jury instructions

  • Skill in organization and effective use of available time and resources

  • Skill in communication, using oratorical and persuasive speech on diverse subjects

  • Skill in leadership and decision making

  • Skill in the allocation of materials and personnel on a priority basis

  • Skill in teamwork to be utilized with law enforcement, court personnel, and other community agencies and representatives

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:

Juris doctorate.
