We're looking for an influential engineering leader to provide strategic direction on initiatives with significant impact to the entire engineering organization across Capital One. This role provides a considerable opportunity for ingenuity, as this individual will work as a key leader of an exceptionally talented team, to deliver cutting edge innovation at a massive scale.The Cloud Safety mission is focused on enabling teams across the company to innovate, safely, leveraging the latest native services on the cloud. This leader will own our cloud controls platform and the developer community user experience that it provides. They will be leading the way to evolve our strategic approach to governance and controls on the cloud, embracing them as a way to protect our customers and associates while also creating freedom for our development organization. Our goal is to make the guardrails strong, resilient, and transparent, and to continue to lead the industry in modern approaches to governance in a highly-regulated environment. The mission will offer visibility and facilitation to the organization as it adopts new cloud services, builds and operates controls, and understands cost dynamics. We believe fundamentally that cloud safety comes through automation and sustainable, technology-oriented solutions. The ideal candidate will devise clear roadmaps to innovation and is comfortable thinking strategically and diving deep; who can identify opportunities and leverage the team to translate them into live solutions and a delighted user community. What you will need to bring for this position:
- Experience building and leading an Agile Software Engineering organization that enables rapid development and delivery of next-generation digital products while running current systems that drive the business
- Technical Leadership: the ability to inspire your teams to deliver extensible and high quality understanding of microservices, operating in the cloud, cloud native design patterns and general design principles, relational and non relational data stores and core software engineering skills
- People Leadership: engaging with your teams and inspiring great results, understanding their accomplishments, removing impediments, and creating an inclusive work culture
- Ability to collaborate and influence business partners in developing and driving strategic technology roadmaps.
- Ability to understand the business, processes and engage in strategy and cost benefit conversations
- A history of embracing and incubating emerging technology and open source products
- Innovative thinking with a passion for problem-solving
- Ability to take ideas and concepts, and visualize them in ways such that they are communicated effectively and compellingly for internal leaders, partners and customers
- Face the developer community at Capital One and lead strategic initiatives on "How we build and deploy software"
- Influence at the enterprise scale with a developer community of around 10,000 members
- Provide technical leadership to a dynamic team throughout the software development life cycle
- Be part of and collaborate with the business leadership team, architects, and software engineers to drive implementation of new capabilities and applications
- Ability to work independently in a fast paced, unstructured environment
- Ensure adherence to continuous improvement practices as required to meet quality and time to market imperatives
- Lead the craftsmanship, availability, resilience, and scalability of team solutions
- Bring a passion to stay on top of technology trends, experiment with and learn new technologies, participate in internal & external technology groups, and mentor other members of the engineering community

- Bachelor's Degree
- At least 9 years of experience architecting, designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise software in Java or Python
- At least 8 years of experience in people management
- At least 5 years of experience leading engineering teams building cloud native applications or DevOps tooling
- Master's Degree
- 15+ years of experience in software and DevOps engineering
- 8+ years of experience with architectural patterns, building APIs, microservices, event stream processing, and high-throughput computing
- 8+ years of experience building cloud native architectures and architecting enterprise applications on public cloud platforms and cloud ecosystems
- 6+ years of experience working with AWS tool suite (IAM, Lambda, DynamoDB, Fargate, ECS, Code Deploy, Code Pipeline)
