A note from our Director of Production:

My name is Sarah Viars and I’m the Director of Production at Henrybuilt.

I started in this industry right out of high school, doing faux finishes for a reproduction furniture company in southwestern Ohio. During that time, I realized my interest in learning how to build furniture. A few years later, I stumbled across the Furniture and Cabinetmaking program at Seattle Central’s Wood Construction Center. There was a two year wait to get in, so I signed up immediately.

While in school, I came across the (very first) Henrybuilt showroom on Western Ave in Seattle. I knew immediately that I wanted to work for this company someday. I’d never seen anything like it. There was something about the way the beauty of the wood was showcased through minimal design that really spoke to me.

In 2007, after I’d been out of school a couple of years, I saw an opening for an entry level position in the Assembly department and I applied - desperate to get my foot in the door. Over my first two years with the company, I took every opportunity to learn as much as I could about the product and the business, and that led to me taking more and more responsibility in Production – eventually becoming a senior member of the production team.

In 2009, an opportunity came up for me to move to NYC and be a part of the business there. After working on the design team for a few months, I took on the position of Head of Field Operations. This exposed me to a whole world that I hadn’t seen before. I was able to see projects come together in the field and got to know our fabulous clients. Those three years were invaluable to me in terms of preparing me for my next role at Henrybuilt.

In the spring of 2014, I moved back to Seattle to run production. It was a little less than a year after we had started to implement the Toyota Production System. The shop I came back to was very different from the shop I’d left – in the best way possible.

The Toyota Production System has allowed us to increase production volume by 270% over the past 2.5 years, while increasing the quality of the product and adding relatively few production staff. The system is focused on preparation, flow, cell-based manufacturing, and constantly improving a standardized approach. The improvements are, in most cases, identified and executed by the people doing the work. This isn’t a top-down approach. It also gives individuals the opportunity to train and work in multiple areas, which creates a collaborative environment and allows for “level-loading” (a tactic for evening flow throughout the shop).

At its core, Henrybuilt is a design company - not a cabinet company. And it’s not just about designing the product, but designing the process and tools that produce the best kitchen and whole house storage systems in the world. If this is something you think you want to be a part of, I look forward to hearing from you.

We founded Henrybuilt in 2001 to challenge the standard for what it means to live well in a home. We’ve developed a family of inter-related, highly refined products that our design team carefully tailors to how people live. Our systems, together with our design service, combine hand crafted beauty with years of focused innovation – resulting in an industrially engineered product that is adaptable to a range of tastes and reflects and adds to the architectural quality of a space.
