Job Title - Data Architect

Location - Piscataway, NJ

Duration - FTE The overall purpose of this position is to provide technical guidance and to define the architecture for the data and content repositories, workflow processes and applications that are managed by the Pubs MSD/IT Data Analytics and Search Technologies team. The incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for designing, and documenting system architectures, as well as guiding and working hands-on with the team to develop, implement and maintain repositories, data ingestion and transformation processes, and analysis and visualization applications to serve continuously evolving business needs.The role reports to the Director, Applications and Systems Development and has no direct reports. This position works under minimal supervision, and the candidate is expected to be a self-starter with excellent technical and analytical skills and a passion for learning and adopting innovative technologies to support business needs efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, architect and build new features, analysis methods and optimizations for the department's data warehouse (built on S3, EMR, Redshift.), MarkLogic content repository and visualization tools (using Tableau and custom web applications).
  • Interact with stakeholders to understand requirements and provide technical inputs and innovative ideas to support evolving business needs
  • Design and document system architectures and where applicable, build proof-of-concepts for new application development
  • Lead the team and work hands-on to build, implement and maintain repositories, data ingestion and transformation processes and applications that provide new ways of searching and analyzing content and usage data for Client’s publication systems
  • Define and update development practices and guidelines while mentoring the team in implementing them
  • Identify and evaluate relevant new technologies and tools in the data science and search technologies areas for adoption into our technology stack.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or similar discipline Req
  • Master's or other advanced degree Preferred

Work Experience
  • 10-15 years programming/data analytics experience in a commercial or research environment, with at least two years in a senior or lead role. Req

Licenses and Certifications
  • Certifications or training in relevant programming languages, AWS/Big Data technologies Preferred

Skills and Requirements
  • Experience with AWS/Big Data technologies such as S3, EMR, Spark, Lambda, Hive, Hue, Redshift, etc.
  • Advanced programming skills in Java, Scala, Python, R or other modern programming languages.
  • In-depth knowledge of data modeling, SQL, NoSQL and other database-related technologies.
  • Experience with search technologies, MarkLogic or Xquery preferred.
  • Excellent analytical skills with ability to model and visualize statistical patterns in data.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and programming frameworks.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with text and data mining techniques preferred.
  • Experience with ETL tools such as Talend and BI Tools such as Tableau preferred.
  • Publishing industry experience a plus.
