The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of highly skilled duties associated with the eye. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant assists the physician while serving as an integral member of the health care team in the treatment and care of patients ocular health. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant initiates and performs effective documentation of the patients chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, review of systems, and all pertinent ocular findings accurately and in accordance with compliance guidelines. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant performs testing to include visual acuity measurement, lensometry, testing pupil function, ocular motility, tonometry, confrontation visual field testing, and other patient services as requested by the ophthalmologist. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant assists with minor surgery procedures, intraocular injections, and laser treatments in exam room or treatment room, including prepping patients for sterile procedures. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant educates patients regarding administration of medications, and pre- and post-operative instructions as directed by physician. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant appropriately handles specimens, biopsies, and culture materials. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Must properly administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of a physician. Examples include: Pachymetry, Glare testing [BAT], Potential Acuity Meter [PAM], Color vision testing, Automated Perimetry, Ophthalmic Imaging [OCT], Keratometry, Pentecam, Topography, and Refractometry; Manual Manifest and Retinoscopy to draft a preliminary glasses. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant opens and closes exam lanes daily ensuring that equipment is cleaned and disinfected in an appropriate manner, battery powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells; slit lamps and projectors are switched off and under covers. The ideal candidate for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant role will have outstanding interpersonal skills as well as a neat professional appearance. The ideal candidate for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant will be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, family of patients, doctors, and patients. The ideal candidate for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant will possess a personal initiative and the flexibility to handle multiple ongoing tasks. The ideal candidate for the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant will also maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA guidelines.
