Within the Office of Information Technology (OIT), we currently seek a Senior Firewall Engineer to support the design and execution of a new centralized service that entails consolidated administration for 80+ firewalls University-wide. The individual in this role serves as a technical expert in firewalls, providing technical support for advanced troubleshooting, request fulfillment, solution implementation, and alignment with architecture standards. The engineer works closely with the firewall architect, product owner, internal stakeholders, and University Information Security (UIS) to fulfill short and long-term priorities for firewall services.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Works with service owner, product manager, and firewall architect to create a service offering for firewalls.
  • Supports service owner, product manager, and firewall architect with the creation of roadmaps for firewall platforms.
  • Assists with the creation and drives the use of architecture standards for firewalls.
  • Works with product owner and architects to define technical deliverables for requests and projects based on internal stakeholder needs.
  • Provides technical guidance, coaching, and knowledge curation for junior firewall administrators and operations teams.
  • Leads troubleshooting and service restoration efforts as part of the incident and major incident management processes. Serves as an escalation point for the most complex problems.
  • Establishes and refines the process for firewall rule-set management.
  • Configures and fine-tunes monitoring, alerting, and event management for firewalls.
  • Leads the implementation of firewall code upgrades.
  • Utilizes ITIL processes of incident, change, problem, knowledge, and request management as the framework for conducting work.
  • Executes operational readiness best practices and partners with operations teams to ensure support for the deployment of new services.
  • Uses Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and agile processes to perform scheduled work.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor s degree and six years of experience or a comparable combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Experience with advanced firewall troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing and implementing firewall solutions as part of medium to large projects.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of network technologies including routers, switches, load balancers, VPN, and IP Address Management platforms.
  • Demonstrated expertise in network traffic analysis using Wireshark or other protocol analyzers.
  • Ability to translate security policies to technical configurations.
