SUMMARY: Under general supervision, analyzes, prepares, and prosecutes criminal cases; processes cases through the criminal justice system, and represents the Teton County & Prosecuting Attorney's Office (TCPA) in all aspects of assigned cases.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The job description is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Represents the Teton County & Prosecuting Attorney's Office (TCPA) in prosecuting persons charged with criminal offenses and violations; assures that cases are resolved in the criminal justice system within TCPA policy guidelines.
  • Represents the TCPA in all Wyoming Courts for a variety of hearings, initial appearances, arraignments, attorney conferences, trials, and other legal proceedings; identifies and subpoenas witnesses, records, and other information required to present the case; compiles and presents evidence; prepares witnesses and victims for trial testimony; brings cases before the court, and argues facts of the case in relation to points of law, case law, and legal precedent.
  • Coordinates with other prosecuting attorneys in preparing complex cases and legal documents; refers recommendation of dismissal or resolution of cases to the Chief Deputy Attorney for approval prior to presentation to the appropriate client.
  • Reviews citations, arrest sheets and other law enforcement reports; gathers facts and data; conducts factual and legal analysis to determine whether charges should be filed.
  • Manages assigned cases; confers with witnesses and victims of crime; negotiates settlement agreements with defense counsel within designated scope of authority; develops trial and prosecution strategy.
  • Reviews motions filed in cases, provides analysis and recommendations, and disposes of motions in accordance with instructions and standard protocols; receives and reviews documents, memoranda, briefs and other filings; reviews filings for jurisdictional and statutory requirements.
  • Evaluates case files, and researches missing and incomplete information and documents; manages collection and analysis of evidence; researches files and computer databases; updates files and records.
  • Coordinates with members of the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, members of other law enforcement agencies, and other involved parties to establish and verify basis for prosecution or dismissal.
  • Drafts complaints, briefs, motions and other legal documents; prepares memoranda of law, briefs and other filings and legal documents as required.
  • Supports the relationship between the Teton County staff and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree required; AND one year of law practice experience; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Some trial court experience is preferred.

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Wyoming/Idaho Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be licensed by the Board of Law Examiners of the Wyoming State Bar to practice law in the State of Wyoming, remain active with all State Bar annual requirements, and maintain a clear criminal record.

Required Knowledge of:

  • County policies and procedures, and TCPA policies and procedures.
  • State of Wyoming criminal statutes, rules, administrative orders, and applicable Federal rules and regulations.
  • County Attorney’s protocols and strategies of negotiation and litigation.
  • Legal case management procedures, tactics and techniques.
  • Procedures and protocols for trial court, arraignment, and other legal proceedings.
  • Legal research methods, techniques, sources, databases, and other research tools.
  • Principles and protocols for the evidentiary gathering of information, documents, criminal records, and other data that may be used in court.
  • Duties, powers, authorities and limitations of a Deputy County Attorney, including rules of professional conduct, and standards for ethical behavior.

Required Skills in:

  • Interpreting and applying relevant state and federal statutes, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Prosecuting cases, developing strategies, presenting legal arguments, and mediating difficult situations.
  • Using effective interrogative procedures, and recognizing suspicious and deceitful behavior patterns.
  • Reviewing and analyzing legal issues and documents.
  • Analyzing and applying criminal laws to information, evidence, and other data compiled.
  • Researching and identifying precedence in case law.
  • Utilizing and evaluating electronic legal research and on-line systems.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, attorneys, law enforcement agencies, and other participants in the criminal justice process.
  • Operating a personal computer, utilizing standard office software and specialized legal software programs.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Expected to be present during office hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $94,960.00 - $99,768.00 per year
