Responsible for performing laboratory procedures, recording procedure results, purchasing, laboratory organization, and training of student researchers.Description of Duties Prepares laboratory analyses and reports test results. Collects and processes specimens for analyses including proper handling of paperwork. Evaluates sample results. Prepares, processes and collects samples. Sterilizes lab equipment and lab environment. Disinfects complete samples and lab environment. Keeps inventory and orders lab supplies. Prepares chemical solutions and growth media. Maintains lab equipment. Maintains records for the lab. Aids in preparation of manuscripts for publication and poster presentations for scientific conferences. May perform other duties as assigned.Supervision ReceivedClose supervision from assigned supervisor.Supervision GivenAids in supervising student researchers.Required EducationHigh School Diploma orGED.Preferred EducationBachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field.Licenses/CertificationsMay be required to have Valid Texas driver’s license. May be required to have All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) safety certificate or obtain within 6 months of start date.Required Experience One (1) year of experience with laboratory and/or scientific procedures or Eighteen (18) hours of college level Biology and/or chemistry courses.Preferred ExperienceWorking knowledge of entomology or similar experience with insect rearing or agricultural sciences/practicesEquipmentProficiency in the use of PCs and other standard office equipment. Experience with standard laboratory equipment.Working ConditionsNeeds to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal laboratory conditions. Occasionally requires working with hazardous chemicals, equipment and materials or in hazardous environments. May require some evening and/or weekend hours. Occasional travel is required. Must be able to work cooperatively with a team of other researchers. Work will take place off campus at theUSDAAPHISlab in Edinburg, TX.
