Answers the telephone, does, filing, orders supplies, maintains records and distributes laboratory reports and performs a variety of secretarial duties for the laboratory in order to keep the office running according to SJ standards. Collects blood, buccal and urine samples, correctly identifies patients, correctly labels and transports specimens, and accessions specimens into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).Registers patients to ensure that accurate and complete patient information is collected and entered in the hospital computer system. Enters laboratory test orders. Contacts physician`s office to obtain laboratory orders, clarify or confirm orders or obtain pertinent patient demographic or diagnostic information. Scans documents into LIS.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Required: High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

Preferred: Formal training program after high school

Experience

Preferred: One to two years in phlebotomy and/or medical clerical work

Skills

Preferred: Skill in the operation of various office equipment and knowledge of software capabilities

Licensure/Certifications

Preferred: Phlebotomy

ACCOUNTABILITIES

ESSENTIAL

Customer Service/Patient Care/Human Resources: Evaluates and prioritizes workload to ensure efficient delivery of services. Transports patient urine specimens or other specimens collected, as allowed. Assists outpatients that report to laboratory waiting room. Receives specimens in the LIS. Delivers specimens to appropriate department for testing. Keeps the shift/lead tech, technical specialist and/or operations manager informed of activities, including unusual patient data or results. Provides orientation and supervision for students and new or less experienced personnel, as assigned. Uses problem solving skills and persistence to obtain an acceptable outcome.

Communication - establishes and maintains a working relationship with the immediate supervisor for position or shift to ensure an open channel of communication is present. Establishes and maintains lines of communication with all staff. Promotes public relations by maintaining a professional image and conduct, in interactions with other health care professionals, agencies and the community. Practices professional, courteous and effective telephone skill. Answers incoming phone calls, takes and delivers messages and transfers calls as needed. Uses paging and phone system correctly and effectively. Participates in department meetings.

Technical skills and knowledge - Performs registration of patients to ensure information in records is complete and correct. Obtains complete and accurate information on test requisition forms. Consistently verifies the identity of the patient being drawn and labels all specimens properly. Following prescribed procedures and using appropriate techniques, obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture. Collects STAT and urgent specimens within the established time frames. Performs capillary glucose tests, activated clotting time tests and newborn screens. Collects blood, buccal and urine specimens for legal purposes. Establishes and maintains chain of custody for legal purposes. Uses laboratory information system (LIS) appropriately and efficiently.

Quality Assurance, Improvement and Control - Evaluates results of quality control, implements corrective action when indicated and documents actions to ensure optimal quality control. Assesses the feasibility of laboratory results through the correlation of data with common physiological conditions. Anticipates and recognizes errors. Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis. Performs and review proficiency testing. Participates in compliance with all regulatory agencies.

Personal and Professional Growth and Image - Attends educational conferences and seminars to continue personal and professional growth.

Quality Assurance, Improvement and Control - Maintains effective quality programs that meets CAP, JCAHO and other regulatory agency requirement standards. Maintains departmental measurements and actively assesses findings and pursues improvement opportunities.

Personal and Professional Growth and Image - Attends educational conferences/seminars and classes to maintain active membership in professional organizations. Stays abreast of current information in the field of laboratory medicine.

Maintenance and Safety - Maintains clinical laboratory equipment according to policy in order to keep a safe working environment. Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions. Notifies the appropriate supervisory personnel when instrument problems are serious and/or cannot be resolved. Maintains assigned areas in a clean and orderly manner. Puts up supplies and stocks as needed. Follow appropriate safety policies. Participates in and recommends changes to the LIS and downtime test management system.

Compliance/Policy Development - Reads and follows all organizational and departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance.

Attendance and Dependability - Follows organizational and departmental rules regarding scheduling and schedule changes. Demonstrates willingness to adjust schedule to meet organizational and departmental needs.

Financial Resources - Assists in cost control through efficient use of supplies to ensure financial resources are being used effectively. Practices inventory control and orders supplies as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned to meet the organization`s needs.
