Ecologist - Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (Anchorage, AK)

Integrated Statistics is looking for an Ecologist to work with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in Anchorage, Alaska. This person will assist the Regional Coordinator for the Alaska Region’s Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) Program in writing a reference book to provide critical information that is needed almost immediately in the event of an oil spill in Alaska that requires NRDAR activity.

The reference book will include, at minimum:

Procedures for notifying the Service NRDAR Team that an NRDAR action is warranted.

Procedures and contacts for obtaining logistical services according to DOI and/or Service rules and policies (e.g., transportation, lodging, communications, information technology, meals, shipping equipment, landowner permissions for access, etc.) particularly for remote areas of Alaska.

Ephemeral data collection guidelines for natural resources under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Descriptions of approximately 12 geographic regions within coastal Alaska with respect to shoreline habitat types, shoreline access strategies, logistical considerations for field staff, and other region-specific considerations for purposes of spill-related data collection such as searches for wildlife carcasses.

Study plan templates for implementing ephemeral data collection efforts, adapted as necessary for each of the 12 geographic regions.

Cost estimates for NRDAR field activities that can be easily and quickly scaled to the size of the effort required by a particular spill, including ALL costs associated with implementing a field effort, and templates for presenting the budget to potential funding sources.

A description of the basic structure, qualifications, and roles of the Service NRDAR Team and the NRDAR-related trainings they should have.

Qualifications and Skills

The Ecologist should possess:

A Bachelor's degree in one of the biological sciences, with formal coursework in statistics and GIS.

Experience in planning scientific field study efforts in very remote areas, including all logistical considerations, and developing cost estimates for them.

Demonstrated experience in initiating and completing analytical projects involving ArcGIS.

Experience in conducting scientific field studies in remote regions of Alaska.

Ability to work independently and to coordinate and develop partnerships with others.

Ability to interpret maps and aerial photography to describe shoreline characteristics.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, English grammar, and writing composition to develop clearly explained, large, multi-part, formal documents.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and/or Microsoft Access to develop scalable cost estimate templates.

Demonstrated ability to collate information from multiple sources in a clear and concise manner.

Demonstrated ability to manage timelines.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge and/or experience in contaminants/toxicology is preferred.

Proficiency in importing data and generating maps in ArcGIS and/or ArcMap is preferred.
