    Summary

    The Northern Rockies Servicing Human Resources Office (NR SHRO) in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, is currently accepting applications through USAJOBS, to fill approximately 10 temporary seasonal positions of Park Ranger (Other), GS-0025-05.

    Duty Station: Yellowstone National Park

    Federal government housing will be available.

    Responsibilities

    Incumbents support the Division of Resource and Visitor Protection, performing day-to-day patrol operations to facilitate visitor understanding and enjoyment, and to induce behavior that complies with park regulations. Work may be performed in both frontcountry and/or backcountry environments.Provides a wide range of services to visitors, including assistance with lost articles, car trouble, first aid and search and rescue; and provides information about weather conditions, park and concessioner facilities. Duties may also include collecting funds, safe-guarding and reconciling funds and accountable stock.

    Work Schedule: The work schedule will be full-time 40 hours per week. Depending on operational needs and work levels, employee may be placed on a part-time work schedule (8 to 32 hours per week), or on an intermittent work schedule. An intermittent schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.Physical Demands: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking,

    driving, bending, and the incumbent must have the ability to routinely carry backpacks of up to 50 pounds

    in steep terrain and in adverse weather conditions.Work Environment: The work is performed in a setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate

    discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather

    conditions.Area Information: Park headquarters is located in Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12th grade, in Gardiner, Montana, five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth.     Positions will be located at several duty locations within Yellowstone National Park. Most locations are 40-50 miles from the nearest gateway community with services (grocery stores, motels, restaurants, medical offices). Medical clinics are available in Mammoth Hot Springs, Lake Village, and Old Faithful. Park Headquarters is located at Mammoth Hot Springs, elevation 6200 feet. Elevation at the various duty stations range from 5300 feet to 7800 feet. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

    • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
    • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
    • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
    • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to two (2) nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
    • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
    • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

    Qualifications

    To qualify you must meet the U.S. Office of Personnel Management's (OPM), Qualification Standards which include experience and/or education as listed in the Occupational Questionnaire and outlined below. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/26/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

    Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year).You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.     A. EXPERIENCE: Must possess one year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include but are not limited to the following: law enforcement or investigative work; emergency services (emergency medical, search and rescue, emergency dispatch, lifeguard); park guide or tour leader; resource management related to natural and cultural resources (museum technician, biological science technician, archeological technician, trail crew, etc.); fire management (wildland and/or structural); assist in the management, information dissemination, or the carrying out of programs in a park, conservation reserve or similar area (fee collection, entrance station, backcountry office, visitor use assistant, volunteer, visitor information desk, campground ranger).

    B. EDUCATION: Must have four years of education above high school (120 semester hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or 24 semester hours of course work in the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement, police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. (You MUST submit a copy of transcripts OR a listing coursework that includes your name, school name, credit hours, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).

    C. EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: Must have an equivalent combination of education and experience. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 18 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required).Condition of Employment: Must possess a valid state driver's license by the entrance-on-duty date, if selected.
