As a Magnet Recognized hospital, we provide our patients with excellent oncology nursing care.Function:The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP), in the Department of General Internal Medicine is to promote and maintain the health of GIM patients across the care continuum throughout the institution supporting the inpatient hospitalist programs.Scope:Affects direct patient care throughout MD Anderson according to the nurse practice act of the State of Texas and MD Anderson Standards of Nursing Care policies and procedures.KEY FUNCTIONSResponsible for assessing and conducting comprehensive patient history, physical examinations, and psychosocial assessments. This involves talking to patients and patients families. Must be able to communicate findings to physicians and family members.Evaluate patient outcomes in coordination with attending physicians and develop a treatment plan.Monitor laboratory, radiographic and procedural data for patient disposition. Must visually evaluate data and prepare written information.Communicate report findings and test results to physicians, multidisciplinary team and family members.Facilitate scheduling, logistics, and future appointments.Participate and collaborate on clinical research protocols. Interviews patients and reviews the eligibility criteria to identify potential patients for protocol studies.Deliver education to patients and their families.Conduct in-service training for in-house nursing personnel regarding protocol requirements.Participate in the education of Advanced Practice student nurses, house officers and medical students. Instruct coworkers in allied positions in recording patient information and/or data entry.EDUCATIONRequired:Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.EXPERIENCERequired: NonePreferred: Two years of clinical experience as an Acute Care Advanced Practice ProviderLICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONRequired:All of the following:Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Preferred:American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.Preferred: Clinical licensure as ACNP.Additional Information
