Who We Are Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays an essential role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with exceptional technology-related information, products, services, and support. The HITS Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) division secures, manages, and architects Michigan Medicine data centers, networks, and communication infrastructures. The team oversees all Michigan Medicine IT-related technical infrastructure, including data centers and communication facilities; wired, wireless, and in-house cellular networks; spectrum management; communication; complex device management; fiber/wiring plant; hosting; directories, databases, and storage; and continuity of operations institution wide.The team works with partners across Michigan Medicine to assure the security, stability, reliability, scalability, and economic management of the institution's technology infrastructure. Job Summary Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) organization has an exciting opportunity to employ a Storage Engineer Senior to support highly available data storage and data protection systems -providing support, provisioning, using, patching, maintaining, updating, and upgrading Cisco MDS and IBM SAN storage platforms. When hired, you will report to the HITS Enterprise Infrastructure Storage Services Team which implements and manages the Michigan Medicine Enterprise Storage environment and providing infrastructure services to many of the enterprise-wide applications used by Michigan Medicine (MM).The SAN Storage team manages a large Cisco MDS SAN fabric stretched between two primary datacenters: a large IBM SVC virtualization farm with 16 Petabytes of virtualized IBM SAN storage and another 11 petabytes of non-virtualized IBM SAN storage. IBM Spectrum Protect is the primary tool for backup and recovery of servers/databases. The SP/TSM complex consist of 4 TSM instances backing up over 2,000 hosts and databases to redundant IBM 3584 tape libraries with 56 IBM 3592 drives and 32 PB of capacity. There is also a multi petabyte Spectrum Protect Virtual Environment to protect the VMware farm hosting 2,500+ hosts.You will focus on SAN architecture and operational support of the SAN storage hardware and software systems - design, naming standards, best practices, break/fix, monitoring, capacity management, vendor support ticket coordination, data center engineering documentation and coordination. You will work independently and anticipate and resolve issues to prevent service impacts. You should have the ability to work collaboratively with other IT and customer teams for coordination of activities.Responsibilities: • Design technical architecture, implement, and operate Cisco MDS FC switches, such as 9710 and 9148. • Maintain backup systems, which include several large IBM Spectrum Protect (TSM) servers, with clients using both native TSM as well as Oracle TDP and VMware (TSM-VE) hypervisor [1] based backups. • Support IBM TS4500/3584 tape libraries with IBM 3592 tape drives • Support the IBM Storage Insights product • Install and manage IBM Enterprise Storage solutions: SVC and V7000 • Perform storage capacity monitoring and reporting to ensure that adequate data is available to assess the impact of growth trends and application changes. • Develop and document standards/procedures/strategies/scripts that maximize the functionality of the storage solutions. Provide storage technical assistance to HITS teams for storage needs, backup/recovery strategies, and to address applications performance issues and perform general platform problem analysis. • Assess current hardware and software technology and its applicability to our environment. Make recommendations for acquisitions, engineering and configuration changes. • Coordinate with the datacenter engineering team to maintain hardware inventories within service now, and coordinate additional documentation of hardware rack locations, specific installation details, cable management, and other data center related documentation. Develop reporting and process to validate information on an ongoing basis. • Work independently, utilizing multiple resources (man pages, google, etc.) for troubleshooting. • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, included triage of Incident/Problem/Vulnerability tickets. Work Schedule This position is being offered as a Hybrid position. There will be times that it will be appropriate for you to work from home. This position will be 40-60% remote work depending on the operational efforts, meetings, and project needs. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends. Participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation required, including triage of Incident / Problem / Vulnerability tickets. Work Locations May require travel to various locations on and off university campus and throughout Southeast Michigan. Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in computer science, business computing or a related field or equivalent combination of education, certification or experience. • Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering support of large complex highly available enterprise SAN storage • Ability to leverage appropriate technical tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks, root [1] cause analysis and performance troubleshooting. • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a related role requiring customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and working independently to design services and workflows in an enterprise architecture. • Solid interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels within the organization Desired Qualifications • Knowledge of Cisco MDS 9700 and DCNM administration. • Experience supporting IBM Spectrum Protect in an enterprise environment. • Experience with enterprise class automated tape libraries. • Demonstrated ability to keep skills current with vendor technology as it changes and matures. • Previous technical support of VMware hypervisor-based backup tools. • Ability to understand, troubleshoot, modify, and write AIX korn shell scripts (ksh), or enough familiarity with other Unix shell scripting, as well as tools such as grep, sed, awk. • Experience with IBM V7000/ FlashSystem product family. • Experience with IBM SVC (Virtualization). enhance our contribution to society.
