Hydrology Assistant – Guest Scientist (20-weeks)

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. Stewards, in partnership with the National Park Service – Yellowstone National Park is seeking an ambitious, technically skilled, and highly adaptable intern who will assist Yellowstone National Park’s Hydrology Program with diverse, multi-faceted hydrologic studies and database management activities. While the 20-week Hydrology Assistant - Guest Scientist will be asked to provide assistance on many program projects and activities, they will be assigned two core projects focused on water data management and implementation of a new water quality monitoring plan for swimming areas.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, driven scientist or engineer who is attentive to detail and has the ability to apply their vast technical knowledge to ensure quality data collection, analyses, data management, and presentation. This individual is enthusiastic about problem solving, willing to try and test new concepts, and appreciates the experience of exerting themselves physically in the outdoors in a variety of conditions. Experience with data management and field data collection is highly desirable.

Work may be performed in office, laboratory, and field settings and may involve exposure to adverse weather or potentially dangerous wildlife or environments. Hazards typical of the Yellowstone field environment for hydrology staff include exposure to extreme heat/cold, wildlife encounters such as bears and bison, presence of environmental pathogens such as Naegleria fowleri or hantavirus, parkwide vehicle travel in variable conditions, traversing steep and uneven terrain, hiking off-trail/unmarked paths sometimes at elevations up to 11,000 ft (average < 8,000 ft), slippery/wet conditions, work in or around swift or cold/hot water, work from watercraft, exposure to extremely acidic or basic environments, chemical usage for sample processing or instrument calibration, and exposure to possible environmental contaminants. Heavy items (e.g., equipment up to 40-50 pounds) must be lifted or moved on a routine basis.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to integrated water data management project which includes new workflow and protocol development.
  • Assisting with implementation of new project involving comprehensive water quality monitoring and sanitary surveys for park swimming areas in coordination with Office of Public Health, Facilities/Maintenance Division, and West District Resources & Visitor Protection Division.
  • Providing general technical and programmatic support to the Hydrology Program, such as:
  • Performing measurements of water-level, stage, and discharge.
  • Collecting, analyzing, performing QA/QC, and evaluating environmental data.
  • Collecting and preparing water and environmental samples for shipping and laboratory analyses.
  • Organizing or performing installation, maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of sensing, recording, and communications equipment and instrumentation.
  • Observing and documenting hydraulic or environmental conditions.
  • Maintaining legible field notes and defensible legal records.
  • Communicating information in a clear and concise manner, in order to develop reports and communicate results of data collection.
  • Maintaining collaborative working relationships with the program.
  • Performing basic research as requested.
  • Preparing high quality technical figures for publications and presentations.
  • Writing protocols and documenting methods.
  • Performing ad hoc statistical or technical analyses of hydrologic data as requested.
  • Responding to information requests for data, records, reports, and bulletins.
  • Preparing site visit summaries and documenting field activities.
  • Reviewing and revising program documents or databases as requested.
  • Generating work products including: preparation of 2-5 page work plans/proposals for each core project, development or revision of project SOPs or protocols, a data release, conference presentation, a syndicated media article submission, and final technical reports and/or manuscript drafts.
  • Working safely with a small field team (2-3 people) in the front-country and backcountry of Yellowstone National Park; in coordination and with supervisor support, potentially organizing or leading team hikes and camping trips up to 15-20 miles per day in steep terrain at elevations ranging from 5,000-10,000 ft with a loaded pack.

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. in hydrology, civil/environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, water resources engineering, oceanography, earth sciences, geosciences, data science, mathematics, computer programming, chemistry, microbiology, geology, geophysics, or a related field.
  • Immediate availability and ability to relocate to Mammoth, WY or Gardiner, MT in the early May 2022 timeframe for position duration.
  • Willingness to live in park provided housing; in past, staff have been assigned individual apartment or an individual room within shared quarters with other intern or seasonal staff.
  • Must pass criminal background checks for NPS and Stewards.
  • Must be a safe driver with a valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a driving record test.
  • Excellent knowledge of database management, word processing, and specialized software to input and access data, produce documents, and manage digital records.
  • Ability to operate safely in a front-country or backcountry/wilderness environment with the presence of a multitude of natural hazards including wildlife, exposure to extreme heat/cold, swift moving water, and so on.
  • Must be US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in hydrology, civil/environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, water resources engineering, oceanography, earth sciences, geosciences, data science, mathematics, computer programming, chemistry, microbiology, geology, geophysics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with ArcPro and/or ESRI field data management software.
  • Proficiency with advanced coding and/or database development experience, particularly programming and/or modeling techniques using R, Excel, Python, and/or SQL.
  • Prior field technician or environmental field experience, or reasonable confidence in ability to succeed in remote field or wilderness setting.
  • Basic knowledge of water-related infrastructure: water treatment plants, wells, culverts, etc.
  • Working knowledge of environmental chemistry and water quality.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use, minor repair, and maintenance of various hydrologic equipment, including measuring and sampling devices, dataloggers, current meters, pumps, and telemetry.
  • Publication in peer reviewed journals and advanced report writing skills, or demonstrated proficiency with technical writing.
  • Desirable certifications: HAZWOPER 40-hour training, Swiftwater Technician,CPR/First Aid.
