TITLE: Grocery Manager

BASIC PURPOSE AND FUNCTION: To direct and control the operation of the Grocery Department, including supervising and training personnel. Supervises ordering, receiving, storing, stocking, pricing and merchandising of all Grocery products. Ensures that all sales of products are processed properly. Directs and controls total store operations in the absence of the Store Director.

MAJOR TASKS AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Encourages and maintains an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with an emphasis on fast, friendly, courteous customer service. Handles customer relations. Promotes Albertsons philosophy of personalized service. Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.

Plans, organizes and directs day-to-day operations of the Grocery Department. Works with Customer Service Supervisor to ensure proper Front End operations. Conducts daily inspections of all Grocery sections to ensure compliance with product quality, sanitation, safety, and security requirements. Initiates and ensures corrective action as required. Assists in the performance of all Grocery Department duties as needed, including receiving, stocking, pricing, facing, storing, and rotating products.

Schedules Grocery Department associates to ensure adequate coverage and service levels. Directs, motivates, trains and participates in the hiring of all Grocery Department personnel. Ensures all associates are assigned to jobs, instructed in proper performance of work duties and familiarized with Company policies and regulations. Monitors associate performance and recommends personnel action such as hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action. Trains Third Person for possible promotion to Grocery Manager. Builds and maintains associate morale. Resolves informal associate complaints where appropriate.

Implements Company and Division operating and merchandising policies and practices. Prevents shrink, damage, and spoilage of products. Establishes Grocery Department policies and procedures as required for implementation of Company policies and/or Store Director instructions. Implements emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.

Responsible for performing all job duties with honesty and integrity.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Requires a thorough understanding of store reports and overall Company practices, policies, and procedures gained through previous experience as a Third Person.

Requires strong written and oral communication skills, good leadership and interpersonal skills, the proven ability to manage people, and the ability to maintain composure in dealing with customers and co-workers.

Requires knowledge of interviewing techniques, and the ability to handle administrative details such as planning, reporting, meeting operating objectives, scheduling, supervising and making hiring and disciplinary action decisions. Requires knowledge of basic math and weights and measures. Must have knowledge of product variety, product location and perishability. Requires the ability to judge and react to business activity. Requires the knowledge and ability to implement emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.

Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time. Ability to reach, lift, stack and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 55 lbs. Ability to push and pull fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary. Mental alertness is required to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.

Must be able to operate checkstand equipment and possess a thorough knowledge of checkstand and scanning procedures. Exposure to potential hazards exists with respect to equipment and work aides necessary to perform job duties throughout the Grocery Department. Occasional exposure to approximately -20° Fahrenheit, 28° Fahrenheit, and 35° Fahrenheit, while handling products in the freezer, cooler and display cases. Working conditions consist of a temperature controlled store environment. Occasional exposure to outdoor environment when checking store perimeters and conducting business off the premises.
