The Infection Preventionist is trained in hospital epidemiology principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, interpretation and reporting of hospital-acquired infections (HAI); educating Colleagues about infection prevention and the development of hospital policies and procedures to insure rigorous infection control standards that meet The Joint Commission, OSA and The Centers for Medicaid/Medicare Services,(CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other nationally organized agencies recommendations and requirements. Duties and ResponsibilitiesSurveillance:Apply epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies Conduct on-going surveillance using Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criteria, documentation, and investigation of nosocomial infections through review of admission diagnoses, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation request and post-discharge surveillance.Assess environmental control through surveillance of watery supply systems as needed, air pressure relationships for high-risk environmental monitoringConduct environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas. Participate in investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consultation with Infectious Disease Division, county/state public health departments and when necessary consultation with the Center for Disease Control Evaluate the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifies as necessaryReport all in-house patients with communicable disease to the county and/or state health department and maintain appropriate records. Compile and interpret surveillance reports to Infection Control committee on a regular basisDataCollect outbreak investigations when appropriatePerformance improvementParticipate in quality/performance improvement activities by assessing, monitoring and measuring nosocomial infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basisSelect indicators based on the projected use of the data. Plan and participate in the budget processAssist in the organization of regularly scheduled Hospital Infection Control meetings and dissemination of recommendations of hospital-wide education;

Plan, organize, develop and implement education programs for all hospital Colleagues including administrative and ancillary services which convey specialized knowledge and skills to increase Colleague awareness of existence of nosocomial infections; techniques for avoidance and preventative measures to provide a safe environment for hospital Colleagues and patients

Develop and update isolation techniques and procedures in accordance with current standards of practice rules and regulations. Participates in maintaining policies and procedures which provide for a program of preventive medicine for hospital Colleagues to include an establishment of policies and procedures relating to exposure of infectious diseases and prevention of cross-contamination. Recommend and evaluate procedures or policy statements relating to infection control within the facility. Maintain an updated reference manual on infectious diseases and hospital infection controls as recommended by the Joint Commission. Maintain a knowledge base of current infection prevention and control information through peer networking, published literature and professional meetingsPosition Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelors of Science Required, current license in the State of Indiana

Minimum Experience: Registered RN with a minimum of three years of current clinical hospital experience which should include, but is not limited to medical/surgical nursing required. Excellent written and oral communication skills with particular emphasis on presentation skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills with particular emphasis on presentation skills. Knowledge of basic tools of continuous improvement systems. Ability to identify problems and develop and implement solutions. Knowledge of team development and facilitation techniques. Skilled in organization and planning, managing multiple demands, and achieving results. Computer knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other programs as needed

Certifications Preferred: APIC CIC certification.

Requires having knowledge, skills and abilities in principles and practices of aseptic technique and methods and practices of infection prevention.
