The Trauma Coordinator is a registered nurse who is responsible for monitoring and coordinating trauma services to ensure an organized multidisciplinary team approach to the care of the trauma patient. This responsibility begins with the pre-hospital care and extends through reintegration into society. The Trauma Coordinator works both independently and in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director (TMD) and other members of the healthcare team.ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIESClinical Practice

  • In conjunction with the TMD, monitors all aspects of internal and pre-hospital care of trauma patients meeting trauma activation criteria, pediatric admissions or transfers, and any others as requested or deemed necessary
  • Supports and adheres to hospital policies, procedures, philosophy and mission
  • Develops, implements, and reviews policies, procedures, and protocols for trauma patients in collaboration with appropriate disciplines
  • Responds to trauma team activations that occur during work hours and prn; functions in whatever role necessary to assist the team in the care of the patient
  • Assists the staff in the investigation and resolution of problems and concerns in the area of trauma care

Education Responsibilities

  • Participates in mandatory educational activities and in educational activities appropriate to professional goals
  • Minimum of 16hrs of continuing trauma education per year
  • Monitors national and state wide trends in trauma care
  • Assists in identification of staff education needs and works cooperatively with other hospital departments to coordinate educational opportunities in trauma care
  • Assists with the development, coordination and implementation of nursing education related to the care and management of trauma patients
  • Monitors physician and nurse compliance with the educational requirements of the trauma program
  • Assists with TNCC

Performance Improvement (PI)

  • Develops and monitors the trauma PI program in collaboration with the TMD
  • Coordinates and schedules the Trauma Committee meetings which include trauma case reviews
  • Co-chairs Trauma Committee meetings with the TMD
  • Conducts pre-hospital audits and provides feedback to EMS Medical Director and EMS providers
  • Conducts trauma nursing audits and provides feedback to staff
  • Monitors and maintains compliance with statewide trauma system regulatory requirements
  • Monitors clinical processes and outcomes and system issues related to the quality of care provided and evaluates for trends
  • Assists with the identification, investigation, reporting and follow-up of incidents and quality issues throughout the program while maintaining confidentiality

Trauma Registry

  • Responsible for maintenance of the trauma registry through accurate extraction, coding, scoring, and entry of the data
  • Ensures the periodic reporting of trauma data to the state trauma program

Interdisciplinary Responsibilities

  • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with all hospital departments to facilitate and support quality trauma care
  • Collaborate with the TMD, physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide clinical and system oversight for the care of trauma patients, ensuring the provision of efficient, quality, cost-effective care
  • Serve as an internal resource for clinical practice
  • Coordinates nursing aspects of the trauma program with ED Nurse Manager and Administration
  • Liaison to Administration
  • Liaison for EMS
  • Represent the trauma program on various hospital committees

Regional/State Involvement In Trauma Care Systems

  • Participate in local, regional, and state trauma care activities
  • Responsible for coordinating resources necessary to ensure that the trauma service meets state designation requirements
  • Coordinate preparation for statewide trauma system designation site visit

Injury Prevention

  • Participates in community trauma education and injury prevention programs
  • Collaborates with various agencies in regards to injury prevention strategies

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education / Experience / License and Certifications

  • Current Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure without restrictions.
  • BLS and ACLS certification, required.
  • TNCC (instructor preferred) or ATCN
  • ENPC or PALS (instructor, preferred), required.
  • Baccalaureate or Master’s degree, preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience, preferred

Additional Skills

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Strong assessment skills.
  • Proficient in initiation and maintenance of IV therapy.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize.
  • Demonstrates expertise in trauma care as identified by a minimum of five or more years of recent nursing experience in emergency department and/or critical care.
  • Experience in hospital quality improvement.
  • Appearance is professional.
  • Interpersonal relationships reflect respect, concern, and courtesy of all individuals.
  • Maintains openness to change and willingness to try new approaches and systems.
  • Plans and conducts work with minimal direction and is self-motivating.
  • Reports the progress of work to the ED Nurse Manager and/or Director of Nursing
