Job Description

Summary/Objective: The primary role of the Product Development Technician is to support the R&D department in the development process for new products and help improve current products while maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to VEI’s policies and procedures.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the R&D lab and ensure receipt of deliveries.
  • Retrieve raw material ingredients and/or incoming sample-ingredients from warehouse.
  • Conduct Raw Material Comparison Requests.
  • Perform data-entry where necessary to properly support R&D development or inventory control.
  • Conduct bench-formulation trials and execute project development as designed by R&D Formulators and/or R&D Manager. Collect, analyze, and communicate data- findings orally & in writing.
  • Organize and coordinate taste-test sessions.
  • Label, safely package, log and ship customer samples for any outgoing customer shipments as they are completed by R&D.
  • Support internal/external plant startups, provide technical support, and ingredient staging as directed or situation warrants.
  • Assist in data collection and data tracking.
  • Provide physical, technical, and logistical support on R&D related tasks and departmental agendas
  • Modify/Create Formula Cards, Packaging Formula.
  • Operate Process Pro to Enter & Audit Ingredients & Formula BOM. (Audit is Exclusive Request)
  • Ownership of simple and complex technical projects as assigned by R&D Formulators or Manager.
  • Help Develop solutions to routine technical problems.
  • Team player with collaborative style and strong listening and partnering skills.
  • Culturally sensitive, with ability to work in a global, multicultural, cross-functional organization, that requires ability to work effectively across cultures and time-zones in order to accomplish the responsibilities needed to satisfy the needs of the business.
  • Technical-leadership role in identifying and creating innovative new products and platforms that are aligned to the overall VEI strategy through developing and fostering internal and external partnerships.
  • Translate consumer/customer needs into relevant product-designs while meeting consumer, cost, quality, and regulatory requirements from ideation through commercialization.
  • Proactively bring forward new ideas from this learning for business plans and to drive new idea potential.
  • Work with Urgency (to meet timelines).
  • Work with Attention to detail.
  • Communicate proactively and promptly (the receipt of an email, your plan, and your activity). Communicate outgoing samples (so Sales and others may coordinate accordingly). Avoid No-news is good-news approach.
  • Be effective, efficient, and professional
  • Comply with all safety and SOP procedures

Non-Essential functions:

  • Support internal/external plant startups & provide technical support as directed or situation warrants.
  • Co-maintain organization and presence of Lab, Ingredient Cabinets, and Bench top setting.
  • Operate a forklift

Work Environment:This job operates in an office and lab environment. This role routinely uses lab equipment, cleaning tools, forklift, scales and standard office equipment such as computers, calculators, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Essential Functions Cognitive (Reasoning): Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions, in books, manuals, and mathematical or visual form. Deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Essential Functions Mathematics: Perform arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric procedures in standard, practical applications. Must have strong mathematical skills.

Essential Functions Communication (Speech & Composition): Expression of a level to respond to or make basic requests in English. Vocalization to alert others to emergencies. Capable of basic verbal exchange, though may not be able to communicate by telephone.

Comprehension and expression of a level to routinely draft narrative information, compose routine correspondence on own initiative, make comprehensive notes in English. May involve a large volume of such composition.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Employee will occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and walk. Employee will frequently lift and carry up to 15 pounds and be able to distinguish basic colors and shades of color. Employee will continuously stand, read with attention to detail, seeing activities near and far, smell and use routine hearing ability.

Environmental Factors:The environmental factors described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

Employee will occasionally work irregular work hours, work closely with others, work around machinery and moving parts and work on ladders or scaffolding. Employee will frequently work around dust and silica, asbestos, etc. Employee will constantly work in an inside environment and work alone

Qualifications

Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical/Science/Math background require
  • Team player with collaborative style and strong listening and partnering skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead planning, development, timing and execution for assigned projects.
  • Must be able to understand and manipulate technical information
  • Strong math skills are vital to this position
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Solid working knowledge of lab-operating procedures.
  • Ability to perform assignments under minor supervision (accuracy, completeness and soundness of judgment).
  • Self-starter, flexible, comfortable working in an unstructured fast-paced environment, able to manage multiple priorities effortlessly.
  • Ability to represent and function in a team environment.
  • Acute attention to detail; Customer-service friendly.
  • Ability to work in a quick-shifting environment; willingness to show commitment and flexibility if workload warrants.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

  • Associates or higher degree in a science based field of study
  • Previous experience working in a lab environment
  • Forklift certified
